ME 4903 Mid Term Presentation

  • Becky Hicks
  • Jeremy Mikulecky

2
Goal
  • Construct structure modeling World Trade Center
    (WTC) Design
  • Focus on the main points of WTC structure such as
the brackets, trusses, core, and outer walls

3
Processes For Construction
  • Drilling
  • Gluing
  • Riveting
  • Sawing
  • Milling

4
Inner Core
  • The inner core is 4x4x24. Riveted to the
plexi-glass walls are two pieces of plywood ¼
    apart.
  • Twelve brackets are inserted into ¼ space per
    level.
  • Core is covered with Aluminum foil and conductive
paste to distribute heat evenly to above floor.

5
Outer Wall
  • Riveted into the plexi-glass sheet 12x12x24
are two plywood strips 12x24 for each floor.
  • Between these two strips is a ¼ space where the
    12 brackets are inserted.

6
Brackets
  • Shown are the brackets inserted into the space
    between the plywood strips.
  • Epoxy is placed on the back side of the brackets
    to hold them in place.
  • The groove in the middle of the bracket was
created using a drimmel tool to mill out a space
    1/8 deep 1/8 wide.

7
Brackets
  • Each truss will fit into the groove in the
    bracket.
  • Finishing nails were inserted into wood on each
side of the brackets groove to prevent
translation of the trusses from side to side.

8
Trusses
  • Each truss is 3 1/8x1/8x1.
  • There are a total of 16 trusses per floor.
  • The trusses are inserted into the groves of the
    brackets.

9
Tiles
  • Ceramic tiles are cut into 3 1/8x11 and 3
    1/8x4 pieces.
  • Tiles are laid across the trusses for a flat
    stable floor.
  • There are a total of three floors
  • The tiles represent the live load on the building

10
Lights
  • Lights are constructed using disassembled 500
watt halogen spot lamps and sheet metal.
  • The disassembled lights are riveted into a
    fabricated sheet metal housing.
  • The lights will be used as heat sources that can
    reach over 200 degrees Celsius.

11
Damage Zone
  • On one side of the outer wall and inner core a
damage zone is cut away using hole saws
  • The outer wall damage zone is cut away using a 3
    hole saw.
  • The inner core is cut away using 1.5 hole saw

12
Constructed Model
  • Finished model is constructed, tiles are
inserted, and heat sources are installed on each
    side of core.
