- XML as an enabler of information sharing
(WITSML, Prodml...) - Mobile devices location-based applications
and data collectors rule- based intelligent
operations remote sensing GIS - Increased awareness of Meta Data Management
- Data and application integration seems
possible now - A strong trend towards revisiting the old

Step 7 Management of Environment
15Data Management System
Data management, system that provides oil and gas
explorers with focused, fast, and accurate
integrated information to support their quest
for energy resources, is the need of the hour.
With the process of outsourcing the job of EP
data management, the role of data collection,
validation and collation becomes vital, through
out the life cycle of the data. The data
validating and maintaining it integrity can be
achieved by proper cleaning operations by way of
data reengineering.
- Data management will generally be of two parts
- Meta data (which plays main role in integration
of silos of different data basses) management - Actual voluminous data management like that of
seismic and log data management.
16 Elements of a Successful Data Management Solution
WEB access (Internet/Intranet)
Easy data validation, view, search (incl.
basemapping)

17Data Cleaning Meta Data Standardization
- Objective
- Attaining accuracy and validity of data values
to attain critical entity integrity and logical
key integrity - Data Re-engineering
- Data profiling - Inspect data for errors,
inconsistencies, redundancies and incomplete
information and identifying proper sources of
data - Data Quality Correct, standardize and verify
data - Data Integration Match, merge or link data
from a variety of disparate sources - Data Monitoring Audit Check and control
data integrity and Prioritizing the data - Commitment of data owners and stake holders to
ensure data quality and integrity
18Data Meta Data Standards
- To identify which data elements (mandatory as
well as non- mandatory) to be taken up - To device a mechanism for common codes of data
for Legacy data - To develop a data standards and metadata
framework (re-engineering and Change Management
needed in connection with the data standards) - Metadata need to be defined, but include items
such as project details, data types collected,
dates of field program, geographic coordinates
of the field area, vessel name along with cruise
navigation should be stored.
19Regulatory Reporting Standards Benefits
Regulatory processes License rounds, issuing
drilling permits, monitoring drilling, receiving
/ managing well logs, receiving final well
reports, issuing production consents, monitoring
production, releasing data, and managing
abandonment.
- Electronic standard for reporting and
communications with regulatory bodies globally.
(regulatory reporting open source) - Global data communications standards would
greatly reduce the costs of developing and
running systems for regulators. - Global reporting standards would be a big
administrative benefit to oil companies.
20Open Data Standards
- Drilling standards WITSML
- Production standards - PRODML
- Geophysics and reservoir standards Geophysics
ML - PWLS
- For the list of additional standards Refer to
http//www.energistics.org
21International Standard Bodies
- The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG,
CSEG), - AAPG
- EAGE
- POSC re-branded as Energistics
- PPDM
- API SPE,PIDX
- Open Spirit
- The Association of Records Managers and
Administrators (ARMA) - Non EP standards
22EP Standards Implementation
- EP energy eStandards are open specifications for
improving EP business performance by leveraging
Internet technologies in the integration of Oil
Gas business processes. Our capabilities in this
scenario leverages our partnerships with the
leaders in this domain like - Alliances, Partnerships Membership
- Energistics www.energistics.org
- PPDM Association (Public Petroleum Data Model
Association) - http//www.ppdm.org/

Partnerships
24EP Process integration
- Advantage of innovative technologies can only be
had through automation and EP process
integration by - Creating automated workflows and an
environment - new ways of working through improved
communication - Integrating remote operations
- Increased collaboration and decision-making
between partners, suppliers and onshore/offshore
staff - Facilitators -
- Technological advances and E P standards like
WITSML, PRODML etc.,
Remember that only about 20 of the scope is
technology -the remainder is governance, people
and procedures,
25Consider the following scenario A producing well
goes down on a Friday afternoon.
The person in the field needs background
information concerning the well so he logs into
the Asset Management System from his laptop to
retrieve the work-over records, logs and a well
bore diagram for the well.
Access to the well files is through a map-based
interface or a relational database.
The records can give information on troublesome
tubing anchor that was noted on the last
work-over. An alert goes to the production
engineer .The engineer logs into the system from
his desktop and can see exactly what the other
person is seeing. Together they can determine a
course of action and schedule a quick tubing pull
and anchor replacement for the next morning. The
well can be placed back on production in a very
short amount of time.
26Towards DIGITAL SMART FIELDS
- Smart well
- Flow meters, sensors to detect seismic activity
and other well conditions, - Telemetric devices, valves to control flow, and
Fiber-optic cables to communicate data to the
surface - Smart fields -
- Integrates digital information technology with
the latest drilling, seismic and reservoir
monitoring techniques to provide energy more
efficiently -
27Data integration Approaches
28Data Integration Approaches
- XML based Standards
- XML based Communication Patterns (SOAP)
- Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
- End to End ERP Solutions
- Knowledge Management Tools
29Technologies in use SOAP
- SOAP is a communication protocol for exchanging
XML-based messages over computer network,
normally using HTTP. - SOAP - way to communicate between applications
running on different operating systems, with
different technologies and programming languages.
30WAY FORWARD
- Break data out of application silos. Expose data
in standard formats like WITSML/PRODML etc., The
data have more value to you when all applications
can use it. - The value of the network increases as the square
of the number of nodes. - Enable your data to participate in the Web the
most valuable network there is. It can then be
used in ways you never anticipated. - How can you do that only by proper data
management through standardization

32SUMMARY
- One integrated system of data, results,
knowledge with information flowing in both
directions provide way for quality decision
making - Integration of EP ERP Database.
- Digital oil fields of future with real time
data and information - gives better reservoir
management and timely commercial decisions
through hydrocarbon allocation and accounting. - Without standards, individual companies can
only look to find the solution that works best
for them, in many cases a better than nothing
but far from perfect answer.
