What is Internet Radio?

• Live, radio or radio-like programming streamed
  via the Internet.
• Shows are archived for delayed, streamed access
  within an hour (listeners need QuickTime, Flash,
  or MediaPlayer to hear itwe think!)
• Listeners call in on regular phone during the
  show (synchronously) with questions or comments
• Alternatively, instant messaging, email, cell
• Equipment allows for multiple callers to be cued
  up and routed into the show when ready.
• Producer needed to manage this, read email and
  instant messaging, handle technical glitches

How might it be used in HE?

• Guest speakers
• Student panel discussion
• Knowledge exchanges with several experts
• Instructor-led orientation to a course or course
  activities
• Challenges
• Orientation to webcast technology/format needed
• Student call-ins plants might be good at first
• Students need to test archived webcast prior to
  first live show
• Provide tips ahead of time to hosts, guests,

What is podcasting?

• Often 15-20 minute talk with topics can be
  scripted, music or images added, audio often
  edited
• Recorded audio, converted to MP3, stored on the
  Web for later listening an asynchronous
  experience
• Often, a place to add comments is provided on a
  companion Web site

How to get podcasts

• Can be delivered automatically via RSS feeds
  subscribe with free podcaster program such as
  ipodder, itunes or nimiq
• Hear this MP3 Podcast library tour (to be hear on
  iPod as the student walks around the real
  library, listening to the guide)

• Can be received on-demand as a streaming archived
  show. Does not store the files on the students
