Title: Chemistry Merit Badge

1
Chemistry Merit Badge
  • Welcome to the Boy Scouts of America Chemistry
Merit Badge ProgramDay One Learning and Lab

2
Introductions and Program Outline
  • Mrs. Linda Bennett, Chemistry Teacher, Naperville
    Central H.S.
  • Mrs. Tracy Mitchell, Tutor/Mentor, Owner TutorA2Z
  • Chemistry and the Methods of Science
  • Matter/Mixtures Physical Properties and Changes
  • Matter/Compounds Chemical Properties and
    Changes
  • MSDS Revealed! (Safe Chemical Handling Storage)
  • Phosphates, the cleaner cleaner?
  • Chemistry Careers and Regulatory Agencies
    (Jeopardy)
  • Lab Safety, then Iron Nail and Cartesian Diver
    Labs

3
So What, Exactly IS Chemistry?
4
Lets Test Your Scientific Reasoning!
5
Matter Its Everywhere!
  • Pure Substances
  • Elements
  • Compounds
  • These bond CHEMICALLY to form other/new
    compounds.
  • Compounds must be separated chemically
  • Mixtures
  • Heterogeneous
  • Homogeneous
  • These combine only physically
  • Mixtures can be separated physically

6
Separating Mixtures
  • Using screens or sifters (based on particle size)
  • Filtration (using filter paper also particle
    size)
  • Extraction/Manual separation (hands, magnets,
    etc.)
  • Chromatography (separate pigment using
    solubility)
  • Distillation/Evaporation (heat to boiling points)

7
P/C Properties vs. Changes
8
Physical vs. Chemical Properties
  • Physical Properties can be observed without
    changing the substance!
  • Color and texture
  • Freezing Point
  • Boiling Point
  • Hardness
  • Density
  • Chemical Properties cant be observed without
    changing the substance!
  • Chemical reactivity
  • Flammability orCombustibility

9
Physical vs. Chemical Changes
  • Physical Changesdo not make anything new. No
    bonds are broken or reformed.
  • Crushing
  • Cutting or Tearing
  • Melting/Freezing
  • Chemical Changesbreak and reform chemical
    bonds. New products are formed!
  • Burning/Combusting
  • Digesting
  • Decomposing
  • Fermenting

10
Type of Change How Can You tell?
  • Physical Changes leave you with pretty much your
starting substance. Size/shape may change, it may
melt or freeze, but overall you have what you
    had!
  • In a chemical change youll see EVIDENCE like
  • Bubbling or fizzing (gas evolved!)
  • Formation of a solid precipitate
  • Evolution of heat or light (without you adding
    energy)
  • Unexpected color change (two clear liquids turn
    red)
  • Change in smell or taste

Any Ideas Why Its Called Periodic?
13
MSDS Revealed Chemical Safety!
  • As a group look at the MSDS Sheets for the
products in your folder and on the products
    around the room.
  • Be prepared to share/discuss the similarities and
the differences on the information regarding
  • Toxicity
  • Safe handling and storage
  • Proper disposal

14
Phosphates The Good, the Bad and the Bubbly!
Would you brush your teethwith fertilizer?!
15
Careers in Chemistry and US Agencies
16
Your Tasty Homework Assignment!

Information for Day Two
  • We will see you again at "National Chemistry
    Day,"
  • Saturday, October 25, 2008, 930 am to ???at
Loyola University of ChicagoFlanner Hall -
    Loyola Lake Shore Campus
  • You will interview a minimum of
    THREEprofessionals working in Chemistry, after
which you will have completed your chemistry
    merit badge requirements!
