Applications
Tunable Ultraviolet LasersMiniature Cerium
Lasers
All solid state tuneable ultraviolet lasers Based
on cerium lasers pumped by commercial microchip
lasers. Tuneable output in the ultraviolet.
Applications include biophotonics sensing.

PHYSICS RESEARCH Ultraviolet and Visible
Applications
Laser Based High Speed Imaging
- We use colour to code information
- 3D imaging Depth encoded by colour using
coloured sheets of light to illuminate a particle
field - Ultra high speed imaging using colour to encode
for time using chirped pulses - Applications in science and engineering
4MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF
PHYSICS RESEARCH Ultraviolet and Visible
Applications
- Disposable Lab-on-Chip for Biophotonics
- Based around polymer (perspex) doped with laser
dye - Using laser machined metal moulds to hot-press
optical structures - Embossed gratings
- Embossed waveguides
- Aim for a polymer device which plugs into machine
with sources and detectors. Spectroscopic
measurements of liquid samples - Scope for PhD projects
5MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF
PHYSICS RESEARCH Ultraviolet and Visible
Applications
Femtosecond UV pulses from cerium lasers
- We are developing the worlds first femtosecond
UV laser using cerium-doped crystals - Ce has a bandwidth of more than 30 nm
- Can in theory support 3 femtosecond pulses
shorter than TiSapphire!
6MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF
PHYSICS RESEARCH Ultraviolet and Visible
Applications
Continuous wave UV
- We are also developing continuous wave UV sources
- Broad tunability from 280 to 315 nm
- Applications in chemical and biological sensing
