Why Did Japan Attack?
  • Japan invades China.
  • U.S. places an embargo on Japan, preventing the
    sale of goods to them.
  • Japan is not big enough to produce all of its own
    resources.
  • Japan needs to find other ways to get resources.

3
  • Japan wanted to invade more countries to get
    resources (like the Philippines).
  • Japan knows that if it attacks these, the U.S.
    will get involved.
  • Japan decided that the best way to get the
resources was to neutralize the U.S. by bombing
    Pearl Harbor.

Why Was the U.S. Unprepared?
  • ArroganceU.S. did not believe that anyone could
    successfully attack them, especially a
    non-white country.
  • Lack of Communicationpeople not sharing info
with one another, warnings of war were ignored,
and communication from Japan was not interpreted
    correctly.
  • Didnt think Japan would attack before declaring
wareven though historically this was how Japan
    operated.

10
Why the Attack Worked
  • In Hawaii, military was more worried about
sabotage by local Japanese and Japanese-Americans
    than an attack by Japan.
  • Therefore, the military
  • Had weaponry locked up one person had key.
  • Planes were bunched together on the ground for
protection. This meant they were also easy
    targets.

11
Result
  • Japan hoped to
  • Destroy U.S. morale.
  • Destroy naval fleet and cripple U.S. attack
    forces.
  • But they actually
  • Strengthened morale and unified the U.S. people
    behind war.
  • Gave the U.S. reason to rebuild the fleet and
enter war with brand new equipment.
