JAPANS ARMADA
  • Japan had 33 war ships, and 7 battleships that
    attacked Pearl Harbor. 6 aircraft carriers were
    used to carry Japans aircraft from Japan to
    Pearl Harbor.
  • Akagi an aircraft carrier means Red Castle Kaga
    means Increased Joy Zuikaku means Happy Crane
    and Kasumi means Mist of Flowers.
  • About 10 miles off the entrance of Pearl Harbor,
    5 midget subs were spotted by a U.S. destroyer.

JAPANS ARMADA
  • At about 600 a.m. on December 7 Hawaiis radar
    operators picked up over100 planes 230 miles
    north of Oahu headed for Pearl Harbor.
  • The attacking planes came twice, the first hit
    its target at 753 with 183 planes, the second
    at 855 with 167 planes. by 955 it was all over.
  • The U.S. succeeded on sinking 5 Japanese ships,
    and 29 Japanese aircraft.

THE SHIPS OF PEARL HARBOR
  • There were 5 battleships in Pearl Harbor during
    the air raid that were on the Japanese attack
    list.
  • The USS Arizona, USS Nevada, USS Oklahoma, USS
    California, and the USS Tennessee.
  • All survived except for the USS Arizona, and the
    USS Oklahoma.

THE SHIPS OF PEARL HARBOR
  • There was one other ship destroyed, the USS Utah,
    but the Utah was mistaken as a battleship
    because of its wood deck, and the fact that it
    was surrounded by other battleships.
  • No aircraft carriers were destroyed, the only
    aircraft carriers in Pearl Harbor were out at
    sea.
  • The U.S. lost 12 ships and 164 aircraft.

THE PURPLE MACHINEDecember 6, 1941
  • In Washington D.C. there was a top secret machine
    only known as Purple.
  • Purple was a message decoder.
  • On Saturday December 6, 1941 purple intercepted
    a message from Japan.
  • It was a message telling a general in Hawaii that
    Japan was going to attack.
  • The message was sent straight to Honolulu but it
    was received to late, before Honolulu had any
    time to tell pearl harbor what was going to
    happen Japan had already attacked.

  • Shouts were heard
  • AIR RAID ON PEARL
  • HARBOR!!
  • THIS IS NO DRILL!!
  • On December, 7 1941, the unthinkable happened
    Pearl Harbor was being attacked by Japan.
  • Bullets flying everywhere, bombs destroying
    ships, planes falling from mid-air.
  • Over 2,000 were lost.

PEARL HARBOR FACTS
  • The attack on Pearl Harbor occurred on Sunday
    December 7, 1941.
  • In the 2 hours that Japan attacked, japan
    destroyed more of the countrys naval force than
    in all of World War I
  • A total of 2,390 Americans died and half died on
    the USS Arizona.
  • The man who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor
    was Admiral Isokuu Yamamoto.
  • The United States knew Japan would attack but
    could not get the message to Honolulu fast
    enough.

PEARL HARBOR FACTS
  • The USS Arizona was the biggest battleship ever
    sunk.
  • When the Arizona was bombed, the bomb set off the
    450,000 kilograms of gun powder on the ship and a
    sailor on the USS Nevada said he saw the Arizona
    jump 15-20 feet into the air and crack in two.
  • The Arizona held so much fuel, 60 years later,
    the fuel is still rising from the bottom of Pearl
    Harbor.
  • The Arizona was as big as two American football
    fields.
