SPECIALISTS WORK AND SCOPE OF THE MEDICAL
IMMUNOLOGY COMMISSION OF UEMS
History and Organisation On 20 July 1958 1 year
after the treaty of Rome was signed
representatives delegated by the professional
organizations of medical specialties of the
European Community (EEC) ,who met in Brussels ,
created the European Union of Medical Specialties
(UEMS)(http//uems.net).In 1958 the founding
states were the six first components of the
Eureopean Union (Italy,France,Germany,Benelux)
.At present the components of UEMS are 28
National Associations as described in Table
1. The aim of UEMS was  to discuss the data of
National Health Organizations and to try to
harmonize the different National situations and
laws present in the European area to the
European Union needs. Sharing together Continuing
Medical Education, pursuing Continuing
Professional Development, Clinical Governance and
Quality projects, both at National and at
European level, are the basis for the free
circulation of medical doctors inside of
European Union. In 1962 individual sections to
represent the various medical specialties were
formed under the umbrella of the UEMS.These
sections included a specialty section devoted to
Laboratory Medicine.In 1998 Anatomical Pathology
was split off and formed its own Specialist
Section. The remaining Specialist Section was
renamed Medical Biopathology .At a meeting in
Brussels in 1992 it was recognized that Medical
Biopathology consisted of five major specialties
Clinical Microbiology ,Clinical Chemistry
,Haematology ,Immunology and Polyvalent Medical
Biopathology . At the request of the UEMS
organization  Specialist Section of Medical
Biopathology has formed the European Board of
Medical Biopathology . The Board consists of five
Commissions representing the five specialties of
the Section. Â
