  • To complete an in-depth analysis of four
    different short stories
  • Observe different writing techniques

WV Content and State Objectives
  •         RLA.11.1.6 - draw supportable
    conclusions, make inferences and generalizations,
    and interpret character traits.
  •         RLA.11.1.9 - analyze a variety of texts
    according to content, structure and tone.
  •         RLA.11.2.4 - use a clearly worded and
    correctly placed thesis statement generated by
    the student to develop a composition that is
    supported by relevant details.
  •         RLA.11.2.5 - develop a composition that
    is focused and coherent and has a clear, logical
    progression of ideas
  •         RLA.11.2.10 - produce a researched essay
    or project following an accepted format (e.g.,
    MLA APA).
  •         RLA.11.2.14 - apply efficient note
    taking skills with careful attention to
    identifying purpose, main ideas/key facts and
    overall themes in order to synthesize information
    into a well-developed essay.
  •         RLA.11.3.2 - continue to adapt/apply

    appropriate author, there are some suggested
    writing topics.  The class may also explore this
    site for bios, quizzes, and other links about the
    story.

    stories/analysis.html -  This site gives a 10
    step method approach in writing a short story
    analysis.  The teacher can use it to lecture on
    the proper way to write an analysis.

    teaching the short story Hills Like White
    Elephants and why it is so effective.  It also
    gives a helpful outline that would easily guide a
    classroom discussion.
