- 1 in 5 violent situations occur at work!
- Incidents physical assault, sexual assault,
robbery - Workplaces restaurant, school, office building,
on the roads - Occupations police officers, community workers,
roads workers

- creates a hostile work environment
- negatively affects the employee, either
physically or psychologically - includes physical or verbal assaults, threats,
coercion, intimidation, and all forms of
harassment.

- Everyone should be able to work without fear of
violence, in a safe and healthy workplace.
Violence in the workplace is not tolerated in
Ontario. - Workplace Violence is the attempted or actual
exercise by a person of any intentional physical
force that causes or may cause physical injury to
a worker. It also includes any threats which
give a worker reasonable grounds to believe he or
she is at risk of physical injury.

27Out of Control SituationsDefensive Steps
- Remain calm
- Try to calm the individual
- Continue the discussion only if the individual
has calmed down - Avoid all provocation and physical violence
- Move to an area where assistance can be offered
- Ask your supervisor or manager to be present for
any further discussion

- If you are unable to continue, calmly end the
meeting and ask the individual to leave or if you
are on their premises leave as quickly as
possible - If you have an alarm, do no hesitate to use it

- Do not hesitate to call for assistance
- If you believe someones life is in danger
emphasize this to the police - Report to your supervisor, an incident/accident
report is necessary
