19Describe a Plot
To foster even more independent reading
- Have students select titles from their reading
log or annotated lists of works read. Enter
words that they use to describe their book into
the edit field of the Describe a Plot search. - Because Describe a Plot searches reviews as well
as subject headings, the words contained in the
students logs and lists are also likely to be
contained in the review of these books - Brainstorm a list of interesting science
words/topics cloning, space shuttle, vaccine,
computers, hacking, ecology, and search for
novels on these topics.
Using Describe a Plot
20Students who are comparing and contrasting a
particular authors style with other authors can
do the following search to find authors that
reviewers have linked on a variety of elements.
Using the Guided Boolean search, we can look for
reviews that mention an author but are not books
by him.
Guided Boolean Search
21NoveList also allows you to connect classic works
with contemporary works even in cases where
the classic is not a novel, such as Romeo and
Juliet.
Other strategies include brainstorming with
students (or individual reader) for what Romeo
and Juliet was about suicide, gangs,
dysfunctional families, doomed love affair
Guided Boolean Search
22- For students who are undecided about their
topics, Explore Fiction is a vehicle for finding
books in a genre or a theme - Students looking for science in science fiction
can browse through lists at the young adult level
or over 50 lists at the adult level. - A history buff can find books set in a variety of
time periods and dealing with many different
issues
