Grade 12 Christmas LIst
  • tis the season

1) Explore your Options
  • If you have not come to any clear conclusions as
to what post secondary institutions you would
like to apply for, you should use some of your
time over the holidays to do some exploring.
Most Canadian Universities have an application
deadline of February 28th. This may seem like a
ways away, but after the break this date creeps
up faster than you expect it will (especially
with exams.) Alleviate the stress by
establishing a time line. There are plenty of
websites to help you with your decision making
    including Santas personal favourite.

2) Check for deadlines..
  • There are many deadlines attached to applying
for post secondary. For instance do you know
when the final deadline is for applying to your
school(s) of choice. Are there any other
deadlines for supplemental information such as
    interim marks, portfolio, interviews, or
    additional components to your original
application? Do you have to apply for entrance
scholarships or do they come automatically with
your application? First year housing is usually
guaranteed, but only if you meet the residence
application deadline, when is the deadline for
your institution? Are there other scholarships
that you qualify for within your institutions
financial department? If so, you will need to
apply for those as well, do you know those
deadlines? Are you hoping for early acceptance
offers? When is the deadline to submit your
marks in order to be considered?

3)Out of Province Cosiderations..
  • If you are planning to attend a post secondary
institution in Ontario the application process is
done through the Ontario University Application
    Centre.
  • Workshops were held at Seaquam recently if you
were not able to attend, you are welcome to drop
into the Career Centre to pick up an instruction
sheet that will guide you through the online
application. You can and should apply online
over the break to be able to cross off one of the
things on your To Do list.
  • Make sure you have your PEN (on your report
cards) and a credit card ready before you begin
    the online application.

5
4) Out of Country Considerations..
  • Are you planning to attend post secondary in the
States? If so, have you written your SATs if
not have you registered online at
collegeboard.com for the next available sitting?
If you are hoping for a sports scholarship, have
you contacted the athletic department or coach
attached to the school that you are interested
in? If you are seriously pursuing athletics, I
highly recommend that you contact Bill Green from
Triple Play Athletics (attended his workshop
recently) He has helped over 120 students obtain
fantastic offers from both Canada and the USA.
He does charge, but in my opinion he is very
reasonable, and is in the business of helping
students not his own financial gain.

5) Consider how you will finance your education
  • If you are like most first year students you may
not have a solid grasp on the actual cost of a
post secondary education. I cannot give
individuals exact amounts that they can expect to
paybut on average, a BC degree, which includes
tuition, residency, meals, text books and other
required supplies will likely run you in the area
of 50 000. This is a generalization, but really
should be considered as a target figure when you
are thinking long term finances. During your
break you could take some time to research your
financial options, the BCSAP (BC Student
Assistance Program) is a good place to start.
Scholarships, and bursaries are another option
but will require you to do some extra leg work in
order to demonstrate your eligibility. Within
the next few slides will inform you of upcoming
    opportunities AND scholarship opportunities.
