Spring 2008 18-645 How to write fast code
Jane Doe and John Doe
Give the experimental setup (machine and specs,
compiler and flags first. Then show a few
performance plots and extract the main message (a
oneliner) from each.
Here you explain the algorithm you used and
analyze its costs and whatever else you know
about it. Change the title of this section.
Here you explain the optimizations you did.
Here you give a brief overview. You explain what
you do and why it is important. Put an
interesting visual. You can put a very high level
snapshot of the coolest results. The goal of the
overview is to get the visitor interested in
hearing about your work.
General Tips
  • The above organization is just a suggestion and
you may need to adapt it to your needs. It could
be 3 columns only (and the middle column could
have a different width) or Background could be
shorter, or optimizations are merged with results
    etc.
  • Never put text boxes like I did here use
    bullets with short statements
  • Use nice visuals as much as possible and minimize
use of text. Remember you are there to explain
things and picture comvey a basic idea much
    quicker
  • Always align all objects, i.e., every object
should be aligned to some other. If you nplace
things arbitrarily it will look messy. If in
doubt left-align like I did section titles and
    the underline.
  • Use color but stick to a few colors, say 2, and
use them consistently. For certain visualization
more colors m ay be used.
  • Avoid fully saturated colors. For example, the
red above is somewhat desaturated (colors ? more
colors ? change to HSL color mode and decreases
    saturation)
  • Use texpoint (a plugin for powerpoint) if you
have lots of math looks much nicer (see below)
  • When using bullets (which you should), make sure
you use the rulers to make the left edge
    left-aligned like in this list
  • Use a consistent subsection style like here
General tips and Done using texpoint. Left
align. Consider a different color fir sections
and subsection (black red or red black)
  • You can put a short list of references in the
bottom left or bottom right as an extra section.
  • Everything said also applies if you decide to use
    separate slides.
  • Get Office 2007 if you can and use Calibri
instead of Arial. Avoid shading anything in
    Office 2003.
  • Feel free to change everything you want in this
templa to make it look better or change the style
    to your liking.

Here you can explain the problem you consider
(e.g., matrix-matrix multiplication. Define your
cost measure and state what is known about the
complexity of the problem if appropriate. Maybe
explain where the problem arises but dont
duplicate from above. Of course you should change
the header of this section.
