• relatively accurate validation
• extremely flexible not channel dependent
• IR rarely used to estimate precip. directly
• Weaknesses
• inherits weaknesses of input products
• 15 hr latency limits utility for some
  applications
• Presently extends back only to December 2002
• Use of IR to govern movement in tropics

• Extend record back to 1998 (TRMM begg)
• Improve input product normalization process
• Develop evaporation correction for semi-arid
  regions
• Integrate use of model winds to advect precip.
• Reprocess existing record
