Title: Smelter in the Park
1Smelter in the Park
- A Plan for environmental care at Portland
Aluminium Smelter - Zoning to extend the park boundary
2Using all youve got!
- The total area owned by the smelter is ???
hectares. Zones were set up as part of the Master
Plan and used for the basis of management and
development. - These are the zones (Click on each zone to look
at what happens in each zone.)
3Zone A - A window for visitors
- A small area created to provide information for
the public. Information boards are erected in a
picnic area explaining the smelting process, the
layout of the buildings, the various recreational
activities available for public use, a history or
the area.
For example, this board shows visitors where the
walks are throughout the parkland.
4Zone B Relaxation for the community
- Zone B is designed to provide recreational
activities for the employees, their families and
broader community. The area contains walking
tracks, wildlife viewing sites, picnic areas and
carparking. This area was designed to encourage
staff to provide opportunities for staff,
families and friends to interact with what the
Park had to offer in the hope that they would
develop positive views about environmental care
at the Smelter (Hill, 1999).
5Zone C Places for learning
- This area invites the public into the buffer zone
around the smelter. There are two houses that
have been set up to run education programs for
school children and other community groups,
Baxter House and Salmon House.
Salmon House is used as the management centre for
the park. It also contains a farm used by the
community for educational purposes, and a nursery
for plant propagation and preparing materials for
community works.
6Zone D Habitats for wildlife
- This is the main area for flora and fauna
conservation within a range of vegetation types.
Within this area, there has been wetlands
rehabilitation and revegetation of areas
considered suitable as habitat for native fauna.
These photos show the wetlands that has been
rehabilitated from the disused landfill, now
helping to conserve both wildlife habitat and
water.
7Zone E Parkland for the Smelter
- Throughout the Smelter there are landscaped
gardens, lunching areas, and vegetation that draw
in the parklands surroundings. These areas serve
to provide a healthy and attractive work
environment.
