Oprahs Birth

• Oprah was born on Jan 29, 1954. Oprah Winfrey
  was supposed to be named Orpah but the towns
  midwife, a woman who helps other women during
  childbirth, accidentally changed two letters on
  her birth certificate, she became Oprah instead.

Her Beginnings

• When her mother, Vertina Lee, moved to Milwaukee,
  Wisconsin, she left Oprah behind. She was cared
  for by her grandmother Hattie Mae. Oprah feared
  her grandfather Henry Lee. She mostly feared him
  because he throws things at her or shooed her
  away with his cane.

Her Beginnings 2

• In 1962, when Oprah was eight years old, her
  mother decided she could no longer support or
  take care of her intelligent daughter. She
  planned for Oprah to take a bus to Tennessee. It
  was a journey that would turn Oprahs life in a
  better way. Veron Winfrey waited Oprahs arrival
  at the station in Nashville. Veron was Oprahs
  father.

Oprah Goes to High School

• Oprahs sometimes gave readings on slavery
  fighters Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.

Oprah At College

• Oprah began her college career at Tennessee State
  in 1972. Oprah continued to read the news on
  WVOL while she attended college. One day, a
  worker from WTVF-TV, the local CBS affiliate,
  happened to hear the broadcast and asked to
  audition for his television show. At the
  audition she relaxed and pretended to be Barbara
  Walters, and the strategy worked well enough to
  land her a job as the first black person ever to
  be a news-show anchor on Nashville television.

Hitting The Big Time

• In 1991, Oprah earned 40 million and had 250
  million in assets. By 1992, Forbes magazine
  reported that Oprah Winfrey and Bill Cosby were
  the two richest entertainers in the world. Oprah
  made 88 million in the two years of 1990 and
  1991.

Oprah Struggles With Weight

• In Oprahs early days as a talk show host, she
  grew larger because she used eating to relive
  stress. During the 1980s, Oprah went wild. At
  one point in 1988, she entered the studio in a
  tight pair of jeans pulling behind her a wagon
  loaded with 67 pounds of lard to represent the
  weight she had lost.

Oprah Struggles With Weight Again

• She gained the weight all again. Now it is a
  problem for her it is a food addict. Then Oprah
  started to exercise regularly. This fitness
  program led her to running the Marine Corps
  Marathon in 1994. The Marathon was not the
  matter. The matter was that she was training.
  She also didnt eat that much a week.
  Exercising a lot and dieting, she was back to
  normal again.

A New Direction

• By the time Oprah was forty years old in 1995,
  she was on her way to becoming the first
  African-American billionaire in U.S. history. As
  host of the nations most popular TV talk show
  for eight years, she and her staff had won more
  Emmy Awards than they had shelves to put them on.
  At the end of the 1995-1996 television season,
  Oprah received the George Foster Peabody
  Individual Achievement Award, the most
  prestigious honor in broadcasting.

Oprahs Generosity

• Oprah Winfrey gives away a lot of money. She has
  established hundreds of scholarship funds at
  colleges and universities throughout the United
  States. Each year, she helps 100 African
  American men attend Morehouse College in Atlanta,
  Georgia.

Something Oprah Always Did

• There is something Oprah always did even if she
  had difficulties. She always prayed to God and
  told a lot of people about him. When the
  children were threatening her, she told them
  about God. Some kids laughed because she told
  them about him but most of the time somehow she
  made them feel good.
