Title: Trinket Box Project
1Trinket Box Project
- Design and Make a Small Wooden Box
- Your box must have 4 sides no hexagons or
triangles, at least not yet! - You have 650x70x15 pine to use
2Options for your joints
- You can choose your own combination of joints for
the corners. Your options are - Butt Joint (screwed or nailed)
- Hidden Dowel Joint
- Corner Rebate Joint
- Finger Joint /Box Comb
- Dovetail Joint
3Butt Joint
- Two pieces of timber simply glued together, can
use screws/nails to give additional strength. - Advantage Very easy to make
- Disadvantage Not strong end grain is visible
and unattractive
4Hidden Dowel Joint
Aligning holes drilled in each piece, glued
together with dowel in the holes. Advantage
Stronger than butt joint. Disadvantage Can be
tricky to get holes to align without a jig. End
grain still unattractive.
5Corner Rebate Joint
A slot is cut on one end of one piece to
accommodate the end of the other
piece. Advantage Strong due to large contact
area Disadvantage End grain is unattractive.
6Box Comb Joint
Slots cut in each piece alternately to come
together like fingers. Can have few or many
fingers. Advantage Very strong because of large
surface area. When done like this end grain can
look very attractive. Disadvantage Harder to cut
than previous joints.
7Dovetail Joint
One piece has a pin cut, its sides are tapered
out towards the end this is named the dovetail
due to its shape. The other part has a slot cut
to match the dovetail. Advantage Can only be
dismantled in one direction due to dovetail. Very
attractive. Disadvantage The hardest joint of
this selection to construct.
