Title: Computing Resources of NERSC

1
Computing Resources of NERSC
  • Kam-Biu Luk
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • and
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
  • KamLAND DOE Review at Caltech

2
NERSC at LBNL
  • Computing facilities of NERSC (National Energy
    Research Scientific Computing Center)
  • HPC facility
  • HPSS (High Performance Storage System)
  • PDSF (Parallel Distributed Systems Facility)

3
HPSS of NERSC
  • 18 TB of disk cache, and 2 PB of tape storage
  • Users can save and access files that are large
    and infrequently used
  • Currently, only 0.2 PB of the tape storage is
    used
  • Usage is charged based on Storage Resource Units
    (SRUs)
  • SRUs 0.0012 ? files 0.4 ? space (GB)
    4.0 ? I/O (GB)
  • In every fiscal year DOE's Office of Science
provides NERSC with storage allocations for each
project funded through the ERCAP process
  • NERSC does not save duplicate copies of HPSS files

KamLAND Utilization of NERSC
  • Long-term archive of data with HPSS
  • Study showed that 100-GB of data can be moved to
PDSF from disk to disk in 7 hours with a 100
based-T link between LBNL and NERSC in Oakland
  • Currently use a LTO-tape robot on loan from IBM
to NERSC to upload data to HPSS at NERSC
  • Looking into the possibility of setting up the
    LTO tape-reading
  • system at NERSC in Oakland this will allow
    one-tape worth of
  • data be uploaded to PDSF/HPSS in about 3
    hours.
  • Reprocessing raw data if there is a need

Summary
  • Request enough SRUs for archiving KamLAND data
    in HPSS
  • Establish a long-term tape-copying system with
    high through-put
  • Strengthen the computing resources at PDSF for
    KamLAND
  • contribute CPUs based on need
  • contribute enough disk space
