Information about the Erie Canal
  • The Person that lead the construction was De Witt
Clinton. Originally the canal was 584 km long and
about 12 m long. The Erie Canal made a big
economic change in the United States.

3
How the Erie Canal helped economically
  • Steamboats traveled down the Erie Canal carrying
freight. It helped economically with all the
steamboats traveling down the canal. It opened up
new possibilities and they could ship things much
    faster.

4
The Erie Canal in 1817
  • When DeWitt Clinton was elected governor in
1817, the work began on the Erie Canal. Before
the Erie Canal was built, the trip from New York
to buffalo took six weeks but the Canal did the
job in 10 days!! In 1825 there were no
televisions so many cannons were fired one after
another. It took 1 hour and 21 minutes to send
the message from Buffalo to Sandy Hook!

5
How the Erie Canal helped the Industrial
Revolution
  • By linking the Hudson River and the Great Lakes
it lowered the cost of transportation by 93. For
example the transportation of materials dropped
from 100.00 to 70.00 a ton. Now you could send 7
tons of materials down the Hudson River to for
only 70.00. Thats why the Erie Canal was
    important to Industrial Revolution .
