Water Purification System
  • Goal Provide Safe Drinking Water for a community
    in need.
  • Objective To develop a guide to build a water
    purification system.
  • Synopsis It is necessary to first test the water
    before designing the system. The group researched
    carbon filters, sediment filters, reverse
    osmosis, ozone, kinetic degradation fluxion,
    water distillation, slow sand filtration,
    chlorination, and ultraviolet purification.

  • Well 300 ft deep
  • Village 1500 ft from well
  • Village has basic electricity
  • Village has no plumbing
  • Contaminants in the water sand, soil, bacteria,
    fecal Coliform, Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs).

Water Purification System Features
  • Sediment filters remove sediment as small as fine
    sand
  • Carbon filters removes many organics and
    inorganics
  • UV purification system removes 99.9 of organisms
  • Storage tank keeps a large supply of water near
    the town
  • Actuated ball valve keeps the water in the tank
    when the pumps are off
  • Water level controller prevents maintains a
    proper water level within the tank by controlling
    the pumps and actuated ball valve

Indication System Features
  • Alerts the community when the system is not
    functioning properly
  • Flow rate sensor monitors the flow rate after the
    sediment filters to determine if the filter bags
    are full
  • pH sensor monitors the pH level after the carbon
    filter to determine if the carbon filter is
    working effectively.
  • UV sensor monitors the intensity of the UV light
    to determine if the wavelength is high enough to
    effectively kill the contaminating organisms
  • The controller is programmed with the desired
    levels for each variable and it sets off a
    corresponding LED if the variable is out of range

Prototype Test Results
  • The test results show that the Indication system
    was able to successfully detect and set off the
    LED indication when
  • The flow of the system went below a desired flow
    rate.
  • The pH of the water went above the acceptable
    drinking range of 6 to 8.5 pH.
  • The intensity of the light dropped below an
    acceptable wavelength.
