Title: Our Solar System

1
Our Solar System
  • Christy Turner

2
What Planets Are In Our Solar System?
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Pluto

3
Did you know
  • that all nine planets revolve around the sun?

that the sun is just a big star?
that there are stars bigger and/or hotter than
the sun?
4
Mercury
  • The closest planet to the sun.
  • Has no water, air, or moons.
  • Takes 88 days to revolve around the sun.
  • The side of Mercury that faces the sun is burning
hot and the side facing away from the sun is
    freezing cold!

5
Venus
  • Venus is smaller than Earth.
  • It is covered with thick, poisonous, acidic
    clouds.
  • Venus is so hot, you would melt if you were
    standing on its surface.
  • It takes Venus about 225 days to go around the
    Sun.
  • It rotates backwards compared to the other
    planets!!

6
Earth
  • Earth is one of the two planets in the solar
system that has water on its surface.
  • It takes Earth 365 days to revolve around the sun
    (thats a whole year)!
  • Seasons are caused by the tip of the earths axis
as it rotates around the Sun.
  • The moon rotates around the earth and is
    sometimes called Earths Satellite.

7
Mars
  • Mars is called The Red Planet because the sand
on its surface is made of red iron oxide.
  • Mars is a desert planet.
  • There are craters, boulders, canyons, volcanoes,
and clouds of red dust on Mars.
  • Mars has TWO moons called Phobos and Deimos!
  • It takes Mars 687 days to revolve around the Sun!

8
Jupiter
  • Jupiter is the largest planet (1,000 Earths could
    fit inside of it!)
  • There is no solid crust of land on Jupiter, it is
made of gasses that swirl around.
  • Rings of ice and dust circle around Jupiter.
  • There are 12 MOONS!
  • It takes Jupiter 12 years to revolve around the
    Sun.

9
Saturn
  • Saturn is a gas planet just like Jupiter.
  • The gasses on Saturn are lighter than water.
  • Saturn has rings made of rocks, ice, and dust and
    they rotate around the planet.
  • There are more than 20 MOONS!
  • It takes Saturn 29.5 years to go around the Sun!

10
Uranus
  • Uranus is a gas planet just like Jupiter and
    Saturn.
  • It spins in a different direction than all of the
    other planets.
  • Uranus is circled by rings.
  • It takes Uranus 84 years to circle the Sun!!

11
Neptune
  • Neptune is the last planet in our solar system
    that is made of gas.
  • It is almost 3 BILLION MILES away from the Sun!
  • It takes 165 years for it to circle around the
    Sun.

12
Pluto
  • Pluto is the smallest known planet.
  • Some scientists think that Pluto was once a moon
of Neptune that broke away from Neptunes orbit.
  • It is the last discovered planet since 1930.
  • Every 248 years, Neptunes orbit is longer than
    Plutos!
  • Plutos only moon, Charon, is almost as big as
    Pluto itself!
