Logbooks/Design Journals
  • The logbook is used to record ideas, research,
    calculations, etc that occur during the design
    process, whether used or not.
  • Log books are important because
  • Document the design process and work done to
    date.
  • Used as proof in cases of patent, product
    liability and other types of litigation.

  • General Guidelines for Logbook Entries
  • All entries should be in ink. Sketches can be
    done in pencil (for the purposes of this class)
  • Maintain good margins (photocopying)
  • Pages should be used in order (no jumping
    around), dated and signed.
  • Do not tear out pages.
  • X out unused portion of page when finished,
    starting new entries on new page.
  • Make liberal use of sketches, photographs, graphs
    etc.
  • Graphs, web pages, and other computer output
    should be stapled into logbook.

  • Logbooks will contain the following information
  • Ideas
  • Calculations
  • Experiments
  • Correspondence (i.e. e-mail, letters)
  • Summaries of oral interviews
  • In short, anything related to the project.

Accessing CEAS Computer Labs
  • As a student in the College of Engineering
    Applied Science you have
  • 24/7 access to EMS building and CEAS computer
    laboratories using your student ID.
  • CEAS computer labs are located in
  • EMS E260 20 PIII PCs
  • EMS E270 25 Unix X-terminals
  • EMS E280 25 PIII PCs
  • EMS E285 25 PIV PCs w/ CD-R
  • EMS E384 48 PIV PCs w/ CD-R

CEAS Computer labs (cont)
  • Each semester a new course account will be
    created for you.
  • To find out the username and password for this
    account log into a lab pc using the username
    accounts and password accounts. Do not use beige
    Dells in E260 or E384
  • Enter your student ID, first and last names
    (remember to capitalize the first letter of your
    first and last name)
  • Press submit button
  • Write down username and password.
  • Click OK on dialog box and PC will reset and be
    ready to use.

Using Microsoft Word/Writing Memos
  • On the CEAS network, when you start MS Word, the
    local pc will go through a brief installation
    phase. Dont worry this is normal.
  • When working in Word, remember
  • Items underlined in red are misspelled words
  • Items underlined in green are (sometimes)
    grammatical errors
  • Word will automatically
  • Capitalize the first word in a sentence
  • Format common fractions (i.e. ½ , ¼ )
  • Underline E-mail address and www hyperlinks.

  • For the body of the memo
  • Memos are generally considered an informal form
    of communication so writing style can be less
    formal (i.e. first person is ok)
  • Single spacing ok. Indent paragraphs and have
    double spacing between paragraphs.
  • Two spaces between sentances
  • Should be succinct. Remember KISS, Keep It Short
    Simple
  • End of memo should have writers/typist initials
    in form dab/DAB
  • Enclosure note at end if attachments go along
    with memo

  • Hopefully you should now be mulling over ideas
    for your first assignment memo.
  • Try to pick a problem that will hold your
    interest
  • Dont worry if you think your idea is to easy or
    to hard.

  • Ultra light weight golf bag
  • Basic idea, pick a project that will appeal to
    you.
  • Should have some degree of familiarity with
    problem.
  • More interesting for you to work on.

First Assignment
  • In review, some projects available for your
    choosing
  • The CEAS network servers are in a room with a
    failing A/C unit. Study, report on and recommend
    best alternative to keep these critical systems
    up and running.
  • The CEAS laboratories will be receiving new
    printers, design printing cages to properly
    secure these new printers.
  • Theft of incoming packages in the CEAS mailroom
    has grown. Study, report and recommend options
    for improving security in this area as well as
    maximizing the number of available mailboxes.

First Assignment
  • At our next class meeting, you will
  • Give brief talk on your problem/memo 2 minutes
    max.
  • Answer questions from class
  • Evaluate each presentation on quality of
    presentation and if you would or would not like
    to work on problem.
  • I will use skills exercise and oral evaluations
    to form project teams for the semester.
