• The process of obtaining information about how
  much a student knows
• Petty (1998) pg 401 talks about

  learning

• Questioning is a powerful way of bringing an
  understanding it is also a vital technique for
  checking that learning has taken place

Formative or Summative?

• Summative assessment is used at the end (summary)
  of the course/module. It is generally an exam
  type of test.
• Formative assessment is often called continuous
  assessment and is a way of correcting and
  developing the learner
