Title: Agencywide IPv6 Transition

1
Agencywide IPv6 Transition
  • NISN Quarterly Customer Videocon
  • March 10th, 2008
  • John McDougle

2
Agenda
  • Current Status
  • Recent Changes to Project
  • Recent OMB Deliverables

3
Current Status
  • The Agency Enterprise Architecture Team, in
cooperation with the Agency IPv6 Team submitted
both the Quarterly and Annual IPv6 updates to OMB
  • NASA currently holds a Level 5 (out of 5) rating
    with OMB regarding IPv6
  • The Agency IPv6 Team has been working with the
NASA Network Architecture Board (NAB) to update
and finalize an IPv6 Address Allocation Plan
  • Currently working to develop approach to
gathering and submitting the required documents
proving NASA is IPv6 capable and meets the OMB
    mandate

4
Recent Changes to the Project
  • Key changes have changed the direction of the
    overall IPv6 project
  • Instead of enabling Center LAN to Center LAN IPv6
connectivity, the project is currently working
with NISN to enable WAN node to WAN node
    connectivity
  • This removes most required host Center support
    from the project
  • Test hosts will be utilized across the network to
generate and collect the required data for OMB
  • Additionally, the Center LAN to External Network
requirement has been replaced with WAN node to
    External Network
  • Overall goal of the Agencywide IPv6 Transition
project is now to provide documentation to OMB
    highlighting IPv6 WAN connectivity
  • Initial implementation should be temporary, with
full IPv6 (even down to the desktop) coming at a
    later phase

5
OMB Deliverables
  • The Agency IPv6 Transition team has submitted the
following documents to OMB to substantiate our
    current Level 5 rating
  • Memorandum of Testing Status
  • Executive Summary of Pilot Test Program results
  • There is currently one remaining OMB deliverable,
    due in June of 2008
  • OMB has requested a Demonstration Plan
  • Federal CIO Working Group has developed a
template highlighting what is required to ensure
    Agency compliance
  • Overall Network Diagram
  • 10 successful IPv6 pings from every IPv6 test
    host to every test host
  • Successful Trace Route from every IPv6 test host
    to every test host
  • The test hosts must be placed at all core
    locations

6
Next Steps
  • Work with NISN to develop overall approach to
generating and collecting the required OMB data
  • Utilize existing assets located throughout the
    network
  • Temporary enable IPv6 to collect data, and then
    disable it
