Title: UML Modeling Tools

1
UML Modeling Tools
  • CSE 470 Software Engineering
  • Spring 2000
  • Updated by Prasad

2
Objectives
  • Introduce Dome to draw
  • Class Diagrams
  • State Diagrams
  • Use Case Diagrams
  • Sequence Diagrams
  • Demonstrate some of the less intuitive features
    of Dome.
  • Demonstrate how to convert diagrams to Postscript
    from Dome.

Creating a New Model
4
Class Diagram Tool
5
Class Diagram
  • Insert model components, then edit with the
    Properties button.
  • All associations must be drawn between two
    classes.
  • Change association multiplicities by the
    Properties button.

Running Dome
  • Dome is installed on all the PCs in the CSE labs.
You can find Dome under Start .., Programs menu
    of the PC.
  • Dome is also available on Sun/Unix machines. Open
    an Xterm and type cse470/bin/dome.
  • Additionally there is one more UML tool called
Dia which is also installed on CSE machines. It
can be run by using the command
    /soft/lus/Dia/bin/dia. This tool works better
if you are running it on a Solaris machine.

Saving Files
  • Make sure that you save your Dome models into
your CSE account using the Save As command from
the File menu. Dome files do not have any default
extension, so put any extension you want.

9
Saving Dome models in Postscript
  • To generate a postscript file
  • Select Print under the File menu.
  • Change the Format option to Single Page
    Postscript or Encapsulated PostScript.
  • Modify the file name, if desired, then press
    OK.
  • Once you have figures in ps format you can insert
    them in your LaTeX files.
  • If you save your Models only in postscript
format, you will not be able to load them back
into Dome in future. So make sure you also save
them in Dome format using the Save As option of
    Dome.

10
Using Xfig
  • Additionally you can also use Xfig. Xfig is a
UNIX-based, generic drawing tool that can also
    generate Postscript files.
  • To use Xfig, open an Xterm window.
  • At the prompt, type xfig.
  • Standard Xfig files have .fig extensions.
  • To generate a postscript file in Xfig
  • Select the Export... button at the top of the
    screen.
  • Set Language to Postscript, then hit Export.
