What is an earthquake?
  • A shift or slide in the earths surface
  • Felt as a sudden, rapid shaking

4
Earthquakes Magnitude and Intensity
  • The Richter scale
  • Magnitude 4 and 5 moderate
  • Magnitude 6 large
  • Magnitude 7 major
  • Magnitude 8 great
  • Modified Mercalli Intensity scale
  • Evaluates an earthquake according to the observed
severity and damage at specific locations.

5
Earthquake Hazards
  • Fires
  • Flash Floods
  • Tsunamis
  • Power Outages
  • Debris

6
Earthquakes
  • Much earthquake-related damage is predictable and
    preventable.
  • Seismic safety provisions in building codes,
retrofitting programs, hazard hunts and family
and community emergency plans increase the
chances of reducing the effects of an earthquake.

7
Earthquakes Make a Plan
  • When you make your plan
  • Find out the potential for earthquakes in your
    area.
  • Identify potential hazards in your home and
reduce the potential damage that an earthquake
    can cause.
  • Store breakable items on bottom shelves inside
cabinets that can be latched closed.
  • Brace overhead lights and secure other electrical
    appliances

8
Earthquakes Make a Plan
  • Consider what you and family members will do if
you are at home, at work, at school or outside.
  • Identify safe places in each room of your home
where you can Drop, Cover and Hold On
  • Locate safe places outdoors.
  • Make sure you know how and when to turn off gas,
    electricity and water.
  • Include your familys plan for reuniting after
    the earthquake.
  • Make sure everyone knows and understands your
    familys emergency communication plan.

9
Earthquakes Get a Kit
  • For those living in areas where earthquakes may
occur, there are items in your kit that have
    additional significance
  • Sturdy shoes to help protect your feet from
    broken glass and other debris.
  • Flashlights and extra batteries ready for use.
  • Extra drinking water.

Disaster Kits and Weather Radios are available at
your local American Red Cross www.shopredcross.org

Earthquakes Be Informed
  • Afterwards. . .
  • Be prepared for aftershocks within the first
hours, days, weeks and even months after the
    quake.
  • Help injured or trapped persons, giving first aid
when appropriate. Stay tuned to local radio for
    the latest emergency information.
  • Avoid loose or dangling power lines

12
Earthquakes Be Informed
