3ERFP Scoping Study European Cryoconservation of
Heritage Sheep Breeds
1 Formation of the relevant European networks
1.1 Existing national policies for development
and conservation of Heritage Sheep Breeds 1.2
Existing national legal / technical protocols for
collection of sheep germplasm 1.3 Identification
and numbers of Heritage Sheep Breeds in each
country, including scrapie genotype profiles of
the breeds, if already available. 2. Collation
of the information described above and use of the
networks to build upon existing guidelines and
develop new procedures that can be applied to
Heritage Sheep Breeds across Europe. These
guidelines and procedures will include 2.1Develo
pment of a European wide regulatory system,
technical process and protocols that will be used
for the collection, storage, use and
replenishment of genetic material from Heritage
Sheep Breeds. 2.2 Design of a new organisational
structure that will be responsible for the long
term ownership, management and maintenance of the
stored genetic material in the duplicated
genebank. 3. Given the risk to the genetic
resources of Heritage Sheep Breeds funding for
preservation work will be identified.
