Title: BT Powering Ahead

1
BT Powering Ahead
  • Neil Winfield
  • Energy Commercial Manager

2
Firstly, some facts about BTs power consumption
  • In the last financial year we used 1.7TWh and
this is likely to rise to 2.25TWh this year.
  • We now have 2 million Broadband customers and
    this is increasing everyday.
  • For every broadband customer we add to our
network, increases our continuous load by 1.7 to
    2 watts.
  • As you see we have a problem of rising
    consumption!

3
So how are BT powering ahead?
  • We have initiated various energy saving
    programs...
  • Replacement of inefficient components in existing
    Heat/Ventilation plant
  • Installed half hour metering at our 6500
operational buildings to manage out inefficiency
  • Encouraged more Homeworking
  • Buying Green Electricity where we can
  • Latterly we are talking to equipment suppliers
    producing low energy designs.

4
But, we are now facing a major problem
  • ..In the 2002 financial year, BT was ahead of
schedule, sourcing 4.6 of its electricity from
renewables (therefore exceeding its own target of
3 and the interim annual target set for
    electricity suppliers through the Renewables
Obligation). However, for the 2003 financial
year, the amount of renewable energy sourced by
BT dropped by over 50, from 93GWh to 45GWh
(equivalent to 2.1 of total energy use). It has
now become clear to BT that the 5 (by 2004) and
10 (by 2010) renewables targets are not
achievable given the current state of the
    market..
  • Source BTs 2003 Environmental Report

5
So what did we do?
  • We commissioned Forum for the Future to
investigate why the green energy is so scarce and
    they suggest
  • A general shortage of supply in the market
  • Heightened competition for what little supply
    there is available
  • Significant green electricity price premiums
    undermining the internal business case
  • Difficulties in securing long-term and
    price-stable contracts for renewable electricity
  • Lack of transparency over the environment
credentials of the available green tariffs

6
The Forum for the Future report recommended...
  • 13 actions for government to enable a sustainable
    renewables market
  • BT should commission a detailed audit of its
estate (both land ownership and buildings) to
assess the potential for installing its own
    on-site renewable generating capacity
  • BT should work with a specialist broker
organisation to explore the possibility of buying
    and retiring Renewables Obligations Certificates,
    thereby expanding the market
  • BT should explore the potential to invest in new
    renewables projects through initiating
discussions with a variety of specialist
developers, possibly in partnership with an NGO
  • BT should require greater assurance from its
suppliers as to the provenance of the supply when
    purchasing renewable energy

7
Some Green Energy initiatives we are considering
  • Embedded generation at our operational sites both
    rural and urban.
  • Use of Bio fuels in existing standby generation
plant and in new heating systems
  • Use of new passive cooling technologies in our
new 21st Century networks and associated nodes.

8
Embedded generation
  • We looking at both Wind and Photovoltaics (PV)
  • Wind
  • The Carbon Trust are investigating our
operational estate to find our best sites for
    wind generation
  • At two sites in Cornwall we are piloting a new
type of turbine designed by Wind Dam Ltd.
  • We hoping to erect large Wind turbines at
Goonhilly and other suitable sites across the UK
  • We could be retro-fitting small WTs on our
    Microwave Towers

9
PV
  • The costs of PV are prohibitive and payback
periods are far too long at present
  • We are however looking to clad a 21st Century
Node with PV panels to assess the power
    integration of the technology
  • We will be looking for funding/grants to help us
    with the costs

10
Winddam
  • This is a new twist to an existing technology
that is both silent and visually appealing
  • It could well be a viable proposition in the
    urban environment
  • But we cant claim enhanced capital allowance
    scheme on this product.
