Hunger Nationally
  • Hunger the uneasy or painful sensation caused
    by lack of food.
  • Approximately 1 in 10 people are in need of food,
including 14 million children and 854,000 homes.
  • Why is hunger occurring? The Reason Only 1/3 of
the hunger cases are investigated. Enough food
    supplied?

Hunger Nationally
  • The Second Harvest reported 36 of the people
they fed were age 18 or younger.
  • Of that 36, 42 reported that they had to choose
between food or paying for medicine, rent or
    their bills.
  • Its estimated that 49,000,000 Americans could
be fed with the food that is frivolously wasted
    in the US.

Hunger Nationally
  • Nutrition and health care problems could be taken
care of with about 13 billion dollars a year.
  • This seems like a pretty steep price, but you
    must put it into perspective.
  • Americans spend around 13 billion dollars a year
    on their pets food.
  • Pets need fed along with your fellow Americans.
  • This problem is not caused by a lack of food or
money, just how the food is distributed and
    handled.

Hunger Nationally Minimum Wage
  • Another major contributor to hunger is money the
inflation of food since 97 has increased 21 and
    gasoline 81.
  • The minimum wage is 5.15/hr. A plate food at
5.15 in 1997, would now cost 6.23 because of
    the inflation.
  • The last minimum wage hike decreased the number
of hungry people in the US.

7
Hunger - Pennsylvania
  • Six years ago Pennsylvania was one of the main
    leaders for low food insecurity.
  • 1,400,000 Pennsylvania families went through
every day acknowledging the possibility that
their next meal may not be a for sure deal.
  • Many of these families (which include children)
live in rural areas and soup kitchens arent
    readily available.

8
Hunger - Pennsylvania
  • As many as 500,000 PA families depended of food
cupboards in 2005. This number is 3 lower than
    previous years.
  • Possible reasons
  • The need is stabilizing
  • The percentage of eligible people accessing this
    assistance is falling.

9
Hunger Rural PA
  • Solutions for reaching rural families have been
set in motion by the Department of Agriculture.
  • These solutions include State Food Purchase
    Program, Farmers Market Nutrition Program,
    Emergency Food Assistance Program Commodity
    Supplemental Food Program.

10
Hunger- Rural PA
  • Solutions for reaching children include
National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast
Program, Summer Food Service Program Child and
    Adult Care Food Program.
  • These programs help children by working with the
schools to produce low cost or free lunch or
breakfast. But what about in the summer?

11
Hunger PA Pilot
  • Pennsylvania was chosen as part of a pilot
program for reaching rural children at risk
    during the summer.
  • If the state works to further its child nutrition
programs, it could feed an additional 50,000
children and collect 2.5 million more in federal
    funding.
  • If this pilot study is successful in PA, it could
spread nationally by lowering food insecurity in
the US by 6 by 2010.

12
Hunger Nationally - Legislation
  • Two pieces of legislation that would help end
hunger are Hunger Free Communities Act and The
Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2005.
  • The Fair Minimum Wage Act will raise the minimum
wage to 5.85/hr sixty days after it is passed.
  • In the next twelve months, it would get a raise
    again to 6.55/hr.
  • Finally, within 24 months, it will receive
    another raise to 7.25/hr.

Hunger Nationally - Legislation
  • This raise in minimum wage will allow its workers
to feed their kids and decrease the amount of
people that must choose between food and other
    essentials.
  • Also, if its raise, this will allow poverty
stricken individuals to purchase healthier foods,
instead of the Dollar Menu at McDonalds.
  • Fast food has been linked to heart disease,
    obesity, and other digestive problems.

Hunger Nationally - Legislation
  • The Hunger Free Communities Act of 2005 will
reduce hunger in the US by 2010 and ultimately
lead to hunger being abolished in 2015.
  • The three main components to HFCA are
  • 1. Have congress eradicate hunger by 2015.
    wa3hq.org
  • 2. Provide more funding for nutrition and
    federal food programs.
  • 3. Finally, to help keep the hunger programs
in tact, such as Food Stamps and school
    breakfast and lunch programs
