Orientation
  • Ovids Metamorphoses is a famous, classic,
    widely, world known Epic Poem.
  • It is an equivalent to the previously studied
    Paradise Lost.
  • ENJOY

7
  • The title Metamorphoses, is itself a Greek word,
    meaning Transformations.
  • Ovids Metamorphoses is one of the most
important sources for our knowledge of Greek and
Roman MythologyOvid is often our only source for
    these ancient stories.

8
Characters

  • Zeus to Jove
  • Artemis to Diana
  • Apollo to the archer god
  • Dionysus to Bacchus

9
Quotes
  • Varied as only verse can be when it comes from a
poet with a virtually perfect ear.
  • -Whitney J. Oats, The New York Times Book Review
  • Ovid, whom I have always avoided, has suddenly
become in my mind one of the first-rate Roman
    poets
  • -Robinson Jeffers

10
Cadmus
  • Cadmus was sent out by his father to find his
kidnapped sister. He went to the oracle Apollo
because he knew the god Jove had hidden his
sister well. He went to build a new home. After
trouble with a cow and a snake, Athene came down
upon him. He was told to sow the snakes teeth
into the ground. From the ground emerged men who
battled. The remaining five formed peace and that
is how Thebes was brought about.

11
Actaeon
  • Cadmus made his family in the new thriving city
of Thebes. Cadmus grandson Actaeon was the first
trouble he saw in Thebes. Goddess, Diana was
bathing and Actaeon accidentally saw her. She
turned him into a deer for having seen her naked
and he was killed by animals. His death was all
    that satisfied Diana.

12
Semele
  • Semele was Cadmus daughter. She had conceived
Joves child. Semele was tricked by jealous Juno
and asked Jove for a favor. He agreed. Juno told
Semele to have Jove appear to her in all his
glory as a god. This way Semele knew he was the
father. Jove had to follow through, but his power
killed Semele. He took the fetus from her and
grew it to term in his thigh. The child, Bacchus,
was raised by Semeles sister. Then Bacchus was
given to the Nymphs of Nysa.

Tiresias
  • Juno and Jove were talking of whether love was
better for men or women. So they asked an old
man by the name of Tiresias who had hit snakes
changing his gender. Born a man, he was changed
to a woman and after he hit the snakes again he
was made back into a man. Tiresias and Jove
agreed it was better for women. Juno blinded
Tiresias, but Jove gave him prophecy.

17
Echo and Narcissus
  • Tiresias prophesized that Narcissus life would
be long and happy as long as he never knew
himself. The nymph, Echo, fell in love with him,
but Juno had taken her voice except to echo.
Narcissus objected to Echos love. Narcissus
continued to reject those who loved him, and one
of them wished Narcissus would feel the
unattainable love too. He fell in love with his
reflection and when he realized what it was he
died leaving behind the flower, narcissus, not a
    body.

18
Pentheus and Bacchus
  • Pentheus was unsure of Tiresias gift. Tiresias
said he would disrespect Bacchus power and that
his own family would rip him up. He tried to
prove Bacchus was not a real god. Acoetes, who
stood up for Bacchus, was sent to prison by
Pentheus. He was magically set free and Bacchus
cult killed Pentheus. The cult included his
family and had gone mad because of Bacchus, who
had them see Pentheus as a boar.
