A Tale of Two Cities
  • While throwing and catching seem particularly
    complementary
  • Children have limited success combining the
    skills
  • Both skills are difficult to master
  • They need both at a decent level before moving
    to utilization levels of skill

Levels of Proficiency in Throwing
  • Grasping the object
  • Preparing to send
  • Release
  • Follow through
  • Begin with objects easy to
    grasp and send.
  • Example beanbags, yarn balls

  • Throwing against a wall
  • Throwing underhand
  • Throwing overhand
  • Tossing to a target
  • Tossing though a hoop
  • Tossing/throwing into a basket

When targets (or some competitions) become the
focus, throwing technique goes out the window

  • Throwing for accuracy involves control of lots
    of body segments
  • and will lead to same foot forward
  • Throwing for power is the

  • the mature pattern

  • Accurately while running
  • To a moving target
  • At a goal off the ground
  • Throwing different shapes
  • Frisbee, football
  • Throwing while being defended
  • To a player who is defended

  • Catching a rolling ball
  • Tossing and catching own ball
  • Catching from a bounce
  • Catching from a skilled thrower
  • Progresses to more unpredictable receptions
  • Catching with an implement

    toss accurate (underhand toss/overhand throw)
