  • Central State Hospital, originally name
  • the Indiana Hospital for the Insane, served
  • Indiana as a mental health hospital from
  • 1848 until its closure in 1994. The original
  • facility was a complex of large Victorian
  • style buildings. In the 1970s, most of the
  • original buildings were raised and replaced
  • by institutional style brick buildings, with
  • only two remaining. One of those original
  • buildings now serves as the Indiana
  • Medical History Museum, which maintains
  • a collection of medical-related artifacts and
  • specimens from the 19th and 20th
  • centuries. Currently, the city of Indianapolis
    is

  • Concord Homes provides housing options for
  • low-income families. In 1996, the Indianapolis
  • Housing Agency in cooperation with the City of
  • Indianapolis, US Department of Housing and
  • Urban Development, and the Westside
  • Community Development Corporation revitalized
  • this public housing community by constructing
  • 170 new duplexes and single family homes, and
  • an additional seventy homes were built on
  • vacant and abandoned lots. In addition, the
  • Concord Community Center was built to meet
  • the various needs of residents and to serve as a
  • gathering place for the families in the

  • George Washington High School originally opened

  • 1927 and closed in 1995 as a result of the
    desegregation
  • order, which resulted in mandatory busing of
    African
  • America students to township schools. Due to
  • community advocacy and the overturning of the
  • desegregation order, George Washington was
    reopened
  • in 2000 as a middle school. Community is key at

  • Washington Community School, a vibrant focal
    point of a
  • community committed to improving student
    learning and
  • youth development opportunities strengthening
    the
  • school, families, and the neighborhoods. In
    2002,
  • George Washington began adding high school grades

  • become a combined middle school/high school.

W. Washington Street Businesses

  • long-standing businesses near the
  • school closed due to lack of business.
  • In the late 1990s and early 2000s
  • the Hispanic population in WESCO
  • began to increase dramatically,
  • especially in the neighborhoods of
  • Hawthorne and Stringtown. Many
  • Hispanic entrepreneurs moved into
  • vacant commercial space which has
  • helped with the revitalization of W.
  • Washington St. Along W.
  • Washington St. you will find Mexican
  • grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries,
  • record stores etc.

  • Haughville Public Library is the second of
  • four original public library branches
  • opened in 1896. The library has changed
  • location five times in its 100 years
  • history. It is now the oldest city library
  • branch still open for service. The library
  • has been in its current location since the
  • summer of 2003. Community residents
  • fought for its placement in a central
  • location in WESCO so it would be
  • accessible to all residents. The new facility
  • includes a community room and computers
  • access to the internet.

  • Formed in 1923, Hawthorne Community Center
  • was created as a multi-service center for local
  • residents. The Centers mission is to provide
  • recreational opportunities and develop skills and
  • attitudes which will improve the citizenship,

  • and individual moral, ethical, educational, and
  • social responsibilities of its members . The
  • Center provides preschool, access services,
  • childcare, summer daycamps, after school
  • programs, organized sports and clubs, open gym,
    senior
  • citizen nutrition and wellness programs, and
    hosts
  • neighborhood association and other community
    meetings
  • and events. Hawthorne Community Center hosts a
  • variety of IUPUI Programs including is an

  • Reads Tutoring program, service learning class
    and days

Holy Trinity Catholic Church

  • In 1883 the National Malleable Castings
  • Company began recruiting Slovenian immigrants
  • as workers in their factory. The Slovenians
  • made up 48 of the population of WESCO.
  • In the early 1900s, when tensions arose with the
  • largely Irish denomination at the St. Anthonys
  • Catholic Church, the Slovenians petitioned to
  • create a new Catholic parish in the
  • neighborhood. Holy Trinity Catholic Church
  • opened in 1906. The church hosts a senior adult
  • day care center, food pantry, and until recently
    a
  • kindergarten and daycare center.

  • The Westside Health Community Center was
    originally located a few blocks west of its
    current location on Tibbs Ave. When Wishard
    Hospital needed to expand their facility, WESCO
    residents advocated for a more central location
    that would provide greater accessibility for
    local residents. The Center offers healthcare
    services at low cost to residents who have
    limited incomes, free educational programming on
    health issues (e.g., how to live with diabetes,
    car seat safety), is a site for the Woman Infant
    and Children (WIC) nutrition program, and
    sponsors the Read Out Load program.

  • The Westside Community
  • Development Corporation was
  • founded in 1985. It manages many
  • housing and improvement programs
  • in the WESCO community. Their
  • services are designed to address the
  • needs of homeowners, renters, and
  • those in need of transitional housing.
