CHAT ROOMS
21
CHAT ROOMS
22
CHAT ROOMS
There are numerous forms of chat room programs.
The most common is America Online. AOL provides
total internet service as well as chat rooms and
instant messaging service.
23
Once you enter a public chat room you can see who
is currently in the room, and they can see you.
24
There are 9 people in this room, including
yourself.
25
It is not required that you participate in the
conversation in the chat room. You can just read
the contents.
26
There are many chat rooms available once you
are online. There are web based chat rooms which
are utilized while you are online. Such as...
27
There are also chat room programs which can be
downloaded off of the internet. One of these
chat programs is MIRC.
28
MIRC LOOKS SIMILAR TO AOL. IT DISPLAYS WHO IS IN
THE CHAT ROOM...
29
AND WHAT IS BEING SAID IN THE CHAT ROOM.
30
CHAT ROOM WARNINGS
31
Most chat programs have what is called private
chat or instant message capability. This
allows two individuals to chat with one another
in private. To an individual who is unaware of
the dangers of private chats, this can be the
most dangerous area on the internet.
32
MIRC HAS DCC (Direct Client Communications)
33
In AOL you can also set up a private chat room,
or instant messaging.
34
As in e-mail, there is the capability to attach
and send files, such as images, movies and sounds
to chat messages, which creates an additional
danger of receiving inappropriate material, even
from individuals you know.
35
Downloading Images
IMAGES CONTAINING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY ARE
ILLEGAL, TO OWN, POSSESS, STORE OR TRANSMIT TO
OTHERS.
36
Not everyone in chat rooms are who they say they
are. Pedophiles are known to use chat rooms to
find their victims. Chat rooms may give
individuals a false sense of security and
privacy. You dont have to give personal
information to individuals online in order to be
in danger
37
NEWSGROUPS
38
NEWSGROUPS
39
Newsgroups resemble bulletin boards where people
post messages for others to read. Newsgroups
revolve around specific topics, such as
oceanography or organic gardening. You can
read what others have written and then post your
own comments.
40
NEWSGROUPS DESCRIBE WHAT CATEGORIES ARE AVAILABLE
AND HOW MANY MESSAGES ARE POSTED IN EACH...
41
LISTS THE SUBJECTS OF THE NEWSGROUP...
42
AND THE INFORMATIONPOSTED ABOUT THESUBJECT.
43
NEWSGROUP WARNINGS
44

but as with any area of the internet, some
newsgroups post inappropriate material such as
pornography orhate crime material.
