Title: Discipline

1
Discipline
  • Discipline, Investigations, Procedures, and Data
  • December 4, 2006
  • Professional Development

2
Faculty Outcomes
  • Teachers will become aware of some of the
loopholes in the current discipline system and
understand how these loopholes can be addressed.
  • Teachers will understand the importance of
    contacting parents and providing follow-through
    with disciplinary contacts.
  • Teachers will understand that all disciplinary
actions of the current system function within the
    realm of our core beliefs.

3
Faculty Outcomes
  • Teachers will analyze discipline trend data at
    West Middle School.
  • Teacher will review how to write Tier 2 log forms.

4
Discipline and the Professional
  • All discipline must be delivered with empathy.
Even the toughest moments with a student have to
be seen as opportunities to forge relationships.
Its not easy, but its expected. Through our
professional status as educators, we can and we
    must accomplish this.

5
Importance of Clear and Timely Communication
  • Communication is key to running any type of large
system efficiently. When communication is not
clear, not consistent, and not prompt, then
    misunderstanding develops. When
misunderstandings are not addressed, then false
    impressions often result.

6
Communicating in the Discipline System Keep in
Mind
  • Discipline often requires extensive
    investigations.
  • When delivering consequences to parents, we need
    to know the entire picture.
  • Extensive investigations assist us in questioning
perpetrators. Information is used to develop a
plan for questioning -- catching perpetrators in
    a lie.
  • In 99 of all cases, investigating is never
intended to question the teachers assessment of
reported situation. What type of a case might be
    the other 1?
  • We have to provide due process.

7
Communicating on Tier 2 Logs and Behavior
Referrals.
  • General Overview
  • State the facts only.
  • Indicate if you are a witness or reporting
something that has been brought to you.
  • State clearly what happened. Poor grammar and
spelling will result in the Return of a
    Referral notice.
  • Communication on write-ups determines the course
    and outcome of investigations.
  • The administration reserves the right to handle
    discipline as it deems necessary.

8
Communicating on Tier 2 Logs and Behavior
Referrals.
  • General Overview
  • Referrals with no teacher signature are not
    processed.
  • Referrals may become subject to court cases upon
the completion of an expulsion hearing.
  • Examples for writing referrals may be found in
    the faculty handbook.
  • Emergency situations must be communicated to the
office via a phone call or messenger. E-mail is
    not a reliable source.
  • When an administrator is absent from the
    building, place referrals in another
    administrators box.

9
Communication on Tier 2s
  • The last section on a Tier 2 log form is reserved
    for administrative purposes only.
  • Teachers may contact Angelica Diaconescu to see
what number in the log system a child is on at
the time. Many of you like to handle issuing the
    discipline.

10
Follow-through on Tier 2s Issuing the Pink Form
  • If you plan to call home
  • Tell the student you will be calling home.
  • Keep the pink sheet attached.
  • Call home.
  • Make a notation that you called home that day on
the pink form. If dialogue takes place, place
the notation in the Parent Signature.
  • Issue pink sheet to student following day.
  • Turn in white copy to Diaconescu keep yellow for
    your records.
  • If you plan to send pink sheet and expect a
    parent signature
  • You must develop a system of following through
    and securing a signature.
  • Keep a file on all signed pink sheets.
  • What systems are working successfully in this
building for follow-through on pink sheets?

11
Tier 2s End-of-the-Year Documentation
  • Upon securing signed pink sheets from parents,
collect them so that they may be turned into the
office or accessed by the administration at the
    end of the school year.
  • We are liable for contacting parents in
    disciplinary actions.

Discipline Data Program Analysis
  • Looking at Discipline Data to Start a Dialogue
