less than current capacity - Globalization for the last four school years.
- Knowledgeable staff who has done preliminary
magnet research for approximately four years.
26Proposal

to the school - Maintaining, to the extent possible, cohesive
neighborhoods (not splitting neighborhoods
between schools at the same level)
29How is redistricting done?
- Staff researches options using a variety of data
sources. - Student Population Trends
- Growth Data
- Transportation
- Facility Capacity
- Staff creates several viable options.
- Staff presents options to the Board
- Board considers the options and amends them or
directs the staff to obtain comment. - Public comment is received
- A decision is made after all comment data is
considered.

47Questions
- Q Why doesnt the school system just build more
schools? - A In North Carolina, Boards of Education do not
fund school construction. That responsibility,
as well as taxing authority, rests with the Board
of County Commissioners within each county.
School systems rely on others to fund school
construction. The Onslow County Board of
Commissioners has worked with the school system
to fund _at_ 105M in Construction. - A In 2004, best estimates indicated that Onslow
required 237 million in additional facilities.
Our job is not complete. - A Building a new school takes between 2 and 3
years. Campuses need relief in 2008.
48Questions
- Q Why dont you just build bigger schools?
- Site and Utility restrictions limit expansion in
some areas - A Where financially possible, the school system
is building larger facilities. - Meadow View Elementary is sized for a maximum of
800 K-5 students. - Where not initially financially feasible,
classroom wings are later added.
49Questions
- Q Are you planning for growth?
- A Yes.

50Questions
- Q Will you be doing this again? Is
redistricting a temporary fix? - A Redistricting is always a temporary solution
unless student population growth stops, there are
few program changes, people stop moving between
school districts, and people stop coming to or
leaving the county. - The next redistricting effort will be in 2008 for
the August 2009 school year. Students affected
for August 2008 should NOT be affected in 2009.
51Questions
- Q Are high school or middle school districts
affected? - A No, only elementary districts.
