1Area of Race Track (BR-92)

2Concept Slide
The math concept of my problem is area. Area is
the amount of space that is held within a figure.
Area is found in many different ways according to
the type of shape that you are working with. The
easiest way to find an area of an object is to
use a specific equation that is used to find that
shapes area.
3Problem Slide
(Br-92)- Before the Big Race, the track needs to
be resurfaced. The price of the work depends on
the area to be resurfaced. Use the dimensions of
the track given at the right to find the area of
the track. (Assume the ends of the track are
circular.)
4Answer Slide
To solve this problem you have to split the race
track into sections as in the figures shown to
the right. The first thing you do is to find the
area of each section of the entire race track.
The area of the entire middle square of the
figure is A50(50) which is 2500 units squared.
Now you find the area of the green square inside
the middle square which is A30(50) and that is
1500 units squared. To find the area of the race
track in the middle square you subtract the two
areas which is 2500-15001000 ft squared.
5Answer Slide (2)
Now that youve found the area of race track in
the middle square, you have find the area of the
two circular race tracks on the side. To find
this you first find the area of the entire circle
which is A25 squared pi. And the answer to that
is 625 pi. Next you find the area of the small
green circle inside the large one A15 squared
pi. The answer is 225 pi. Finally you subtract
the small square from the large square to find
the area track which is 400 pi ft squared.
With the known area of both the circular ends of
the track and the middle section of track you can
add both to get the entire area of track which is
400 pi 10002257 ft squared.
6Application Slide
Say you need to spread carpet on the floor but
you dont know how much carpet to buy, then you
can use area.
With this figure you can easily find the area.
All you must do is to separate it into 2 smaller
rectangles as shown to the right. Now you just
find the area of both small rectangles and add
the result.
