Teacher Information
  • Content This lesson provides a review of
fractions. It is meant to be used after the
    concepts of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division of fractions have
    been taught.
  • Grade Level 7
  • Creator Abby Neiburger
  • Curriculum Objective/MAP Standard IIB. Computes
the sum, difference, product, or quotient of
whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. MA-1
    3.2, 3.3, 4.1
  • Students will need a pencil and paper for this
    presentation.

3
Addition!
  • The most important fact to remember about adding
    fractions is
  • In order to add fractions, the denominators must
    be the same!

Common Denominators
4
Pie, Pie, Me oh My!
  • Rose has 1/4 of an apple pie, and her friend has
2/4 of the same pie. Together, Rose and her
friend have what fractional part of the apple
    pie?
  • Together, they have ¾ of the pie!

5
Checkers!
  • Taylor had 3 whole checker sets and 2/3 of
another. Then his uncle gave him 4 whole checker
sets and 5/6 of another. How many checker sets
    does Taylor end up with?
  • 32/3 45/6
  • Taylor ends up with 81/2 checker sets!

6
Subtraction!
  • You also need common denominators to subtract
    fractions.
  • Adding and subtracting fractions are very similar
    operations!
  • When subtracting with mixed numbers, it is easier
to change them to improper fractions.

7
Fake blood everywhere!
  • Jennifer bought 103/4 gallons of fake blood, to
play some kind of terrible trick on her good
friend Taylor. On her way to set up the trick
she spilled 37/8 gallons of fake blood. How much
    blood did she have left?
  • She had 67/8 gallons remaining. Gross!

8
Multiplication!
  • Many people think that multiplying fractions is
the easiest operation. You dont need a common
    denominator, just multiply straight across.
  • If you have mixed numbers in your problem,
remember to change them to improper fractions
    before multiplying!

9
Have you lost your marbles?
  • Quincy has 6 bags of marbles. If he wants to
give away 4/5 of them, how many bags will he give
    away?
  • Hint Remember what the word of means in math!
  • (Always remember to simplify your answers!)
  • He will give away 44/5 bags of marbles! He
really has lost his marbles now!

10
Picnicking!
  • Sam and Laurie have 31/2 cantaloupes. Jennifer
is going on a picnic and she wants to take 1/5 of
their cantaloupes with her. How many cantaloupes
will she be able to take?
  • She will take 7/10 of a cantaloupe!

11
Division!
  • Division is similar to multiplication, only you
have to do one small step first. When you see
the division sign, simply change it to
multiplication and flip the second fraction
upside down. This is called using the
    multiplicative inverse!
  • If you have division with mixed numbers, dont
forget to change them to improper fractions first!

12
Slice that pizza up!
  • Saucy Sammy has 7/8 of a pizza. How many skinny
little 1/32 slices are there in his 7/8?
  • There are 28 little slices! That could make your
    pizza really go around!

13
Watch out for the bugs!
  • Frita has a bug collection that consists of 53/5
bags of bugs. How many ¼ bags does she have in
    her collection?
  • She has 222/5 bags of bugs! What is she
    thinking?!

14
Finale!
  • AdditionRemember your common denominator!
  • SubtractionRemember you common denominator!
  • MultiplicationMultiply straight across!
  • DivisionChange it to multiplication and flip the
    second fraction over!
