- Originally constructed as a seismic vessel the
Maurice Ewing was acquired in 1989, modified, and
outfitted to perform the tasks required of a
general purpose research vessel. This includes
hull mounted 3.5 and 12 khz transducers and an
Atlas deep ocean multibeam swath bottom mapping
system. - Over the side sampling capabilities include 15 MT
SWL starboard and stern a-frames serving four
winches carrying 10,000m of 9/16" 3x19, 0.680"
coaxial cable, 0.322' CTD wire, or 1/4' 3x19
wire. - The Maurice Ewing has extensive geophysical
capabilities which include a Syntrak 480-24
seismic recording system with a 6km hydrophone
streamer cable and a 2000 psi, 20 air gun 8300
cubic inch tuned sound source array as well as a
portable high resolution system with 2 GI guns
and an ITI streamer cable.

30How do you get access to these vessels and
facilities?
- Collaboration with Ocean Science Colleagues that
have shiptime - Your own research project with funding for
shiptime - Fill out a UNOLS Ship Time Request
- Make contact with other investigators
- Make contact with ship operators

35You should fill out a UNOLS Ship Time Request if
you
- Plan to work at sea and...
- Funded research project
- Submitting a proposal for an at sea research
project - Need to be the primary user of a research vessel
- Wish to participate in a research cruise as an
ancillary project
36Scheduling process
- UNOLS ship schedulers use ship time requests as
starting point - Ships are scheduled on a Calendar Year basis
- Preliminary schedules are created in the spring
and posted to Web in August - Scheduling meetings in July and Sep. refine
schedules to final form
37Scheduling Realities
- Funded work is given a priority
- NSF funds 60 of shiptime
- NSF funding proposals must meet Feb deadline with
decisions by July - Agencies with later funding decisions affect your
ability to schedule work when needed - Make contact early and follow through

- Local 3- 6,000 Per Day
- CG Icebreakers 20,000 Per Day
- Any part of a day at sea or in a port other than
home port charged - Provisional unless set by Contract
42Collaborations
- Search Ship Time and Schedule Data bases and
contact researchers working in your area of
interest - Talk with ship schedulers and operators
