10First, the basics . . .
- Highlight all your parenthetical documentation
- Check for stacking! 2 pieces of commentary for
EACH quote - No quotes or paraphrases should be in topic
sentences. Exception attention getter could
have a quote, but it needs to be amazing! - Check for quotes or paraphrases that are too
long! Your words should drive this piece. - Check your PD for internet sources, do not put
any page numbers! (Smith).

- Sometimes you may have to use an indirect
quotation. An indirect quotation is a quotation
that you found in another source that was quoting
from the original. For such indirect quotations,
use "qtd. in" to indicate the source. - For example
- Ravitch argues that high schools are pressured
to act as "social service centers, and they don't
do that well" (qtd.in Weisman 259).

- Do you need blocked quotes anywhere? Dont have
more than 2 (1 is best) - Long Quotations (Blocked Quotes)
- Place quotations longer than four typed lines in
a free-standing block of typewritten lines, and
omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a
new line, indented one inch from the left margin,
and maintain double-spacing. Your parenthetical
citation should come after the closing
punctuation mark. When quoting verse, maintain
original line breaks. (You should maintain
double-spacing throughout your essay.)

- Underline your thesis be sure it is the last
sentence (or two) of your intro paragraph. - Double double space between paragraphs?

- Are they balanced?
- Are the topic sentences free of shady pronouns
read each one right now and highlight any shady
pronouns! Especially keep an eye out for these,
this, it - Look again at your quotes and paraphrases are
they sprinkled in throughout?

- History of the problem label with a bracket
where your history is. - Extent of the Problem label with a bracket
where your extent is. Do you address who is
directly affected? How bad it really is? - Repercussions (impact/effect) label with a
bracket where your repercussions section is. Do
you clearly break down what the future will hold
if YOUR problem is not solved?

- Future Solutions - label with a bracket where
your solutions are, you will probably want 2, if
possible or 1 strong one. Underline exactly
where you state your main solution. You want to
have this at the very beginning of your solution
paragraph.
22The Conclusion do you
- Stress the importance of the thesis statement?
- Give the essay a sense of completeness?
- Leave a final impression on the reader?

- Must be double-spaced
- Have its own header
- Alphabetical order
