Title: Joshua 5 Its a new land

2Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginning
3Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginning
- (Josh 51 NKJV) So it was, when all the kings of
the Amorites who were on the west side of the
Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who
were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up
the waters of the Jordan from before the children
of Israel until we had crossed over,
4Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginning
- (Josh 51 NKJV) So it was, when all the kings of
the Amorites who were on the west side of the
Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites who
were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up
the waters of the Jordan from before the children
of Israel until we had crossed over,
that their heart melted and there was no spirit
in them any longer because of the children of
Israel.

6Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginningHow
about a Spiritual new beginning
- (Josh 52-3 NKJV) At that time the LORD said to
Joshua, "Make flint knives for yourself, and
circumcise the sons of Israel again the second
time." 3 So Joshua made flint knives for
himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at
the hill of the foreskins.
7Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginningHow
about a Spiritual new beginning
- (Josh 53 NKJV) So Joshua made flint knives for
himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at
the hill of the foreskins.
So how is this a Spiritual new beginning?
8Notice how Paul compares circumcision and baptism
So how is this a Spiritual new beginning?
9Notice how Paul compares circumcision and baptism
So how is this a Spiritual new beginning?
- ((Col 211-12 NKJV) In Him you were also
circumcised with the circumcision made without
hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the
flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,
10Notice how Paul compares circumcision and baptism
So how is this a Spiritual new beginning?
- ((Col 211-12 NKJV) . . . by the circumcision of
Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which
you also were raised with Him through faith in
the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
11Notice how Paul compares circumcision and baptism
- ((Col 211-12 NKJV) . . . by the circumcision of
Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which
you also were raised with Him through faith in
the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
So thinking in reverse order, time wise,
circumcision was, for them, what baptism is for
us.
12Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginningHow
about a Spiritual new beginning
- (Josh 53 NKJV) So Joshua made flint knives for
himself, and circumcised the sons of Israel at
the hill of the foreskins.
But what about flint knives?
13Before the use of iron was common, all the
nations of the earth had their edge-tools made of
stones, flints, etc. Our ancestors in these
countries made their arrow and spear-heads of
flint these I have often seen turned up by the
plough. -- Adam Clarke
But what about flint knives? -- Adam Clarke
- In the lately discovered islands this is found to
be a common case.
14But we cannot suppose that at the time here
referred to the Israelites were destitute of
iron, and were therefore obliged to use knives
made of stone or flint, their different
manufactures in the wilderness prove that they
must have had both iron and steel. -- Adam Clarke
But what about flint knives?
15Why then use knives made of stone? Probably it
was unlawful to use metal of any kind in this
religious rite and indeed this seems likely from
the circumstance of Zipporah (Exo_425) taking a
sharp stone and circumcising her son and we
find, from the most ancient and authentic
accounts, that the Egyptians considered it
unlawful or profane to use any kind of metal to
make incisions in the human body, when preparing
it for embalming
16Bible Answer?I really dont know of one, but
there are other answers that are hinted at, but
not clear.
17Bible Answer?I really dont know of one, but
there are other answers that are hinted at, but
not clear. How about this scripture (Exo
2025 NKJV) 'And if you make Me an altar of
stone, you shall not build it of hewn stone for
if you use your tool on it, you have profaned it.
18Bible Answer? (Exo 2025 NKJV) 'And if you
make Me an altar of stone, you shall not build it
of hewn stone for if you use your tool on it,
you have profaned it. Hewn stone would seem to
imply steel of some kind, but God gives no
explanation as why you have profaned it.
19Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginningHow

But was it really the second time?
- (Josh 52 NKJV) At that time the LORD said to
Joshua, "Make flint knives for yourself, and
circumcise the sons of Israel again the second
time.
20Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginningHow
about a Spiritual new beginning
But was it really the second time?
- (Josh 54 NKJV) And this is the reason why
Joshua circumcised them All the people who came
out of Egypt who were males, all the men of war,
had died in the wilderness on the way, after they
had come out of Egypt.
21Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginningHow
about a Spiritual new beginning
But was it really the second time?
- (Josh 55 NKJV) For all the people who came out
had been circumcised, but all the people born in
the wilderness, on the way as they came out of
Egypt, had not been circumcised.
So we are asking, How is this a second time?
22Joshua 5Its a new landIts a new beginningHow
about a Spiritual new beginning
An explanation by Albert Barnes
- An explaCircumcise again ... - i. e. make that
which once was a circumcised people but is not so
now, once more a circumcised people.
23Its a new landIts a new beginning
How did they get here?
- (Josh 56 NKJV) For the children of Israel
walked forty years in the wilderness, till all
the people who were men of war, who came out of
Egypt, were consumed, because they did not obey
the voice of the LORD to whom the LORD swore
that He would not show them the land which the
LORD had sworn to their fathers that He would
give us, "a land flowing with milk and honey."
24Its a new landIts a new beginning
Now its time to move on.
- (Josh 57-8 NKJV) Then Joshua circumcised their
sons whom He raised up in their place for they
were uncircumcised, because they had not been
circumcised on the way. 8 So it was, when they
had finished circumcising all the people, that
they stayed in their places in the camp till they
were healed.
25Its a new landIts a new beginning
It must have been a time of great forgiveness!
- (Josh 57-8 NKJV) . . . for they were
uncircumcised, because they had not been
circumcised on the way. - (Gen 1714 NKJV) "And the uncircumcised male
child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his
foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his
people he has broken My covenant."
26Its a new beginning
And yes, there is hope for such a person!
(Gen 1714 NKJV) "And the uncircumcised male
child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his
foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his
people he has broken My covenant.
- (Josh 59 NKJV) Then the LORD said to Joshua,
"This day I have rolled away the reproach of
Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place
is called Gilgal to this day.
27Its a new beginning
Gilgalso close to Jericho!
- (Josh 59 NKJV) Then the LORD said to Joshua,
"This day I have rolled away the reproach of
Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place
is called Gilgal to this day.
28Its a new beginningIts Passover Time
- (Josh 510 NKJV) Now the children of Israel
camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the
fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the
plains of Jericho.
29Its a new beginningIts Passover Time
- (Josh 510 NKJV) Now the children of Israel
camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the
fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the
plains of Jericho.
How Fitting. The original Passover saw their
parents delivered from Egypt. Now they are
realizing what it was all about. Freedom, and a
new land.
30Its a new beginningIts Passover TimeBut it
is a new Spiritual beginning
- (Josh 510 NKJV) Now the children of Israel
camped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the
fourteenth day of the month at twilight on the
plains of Jericho.
How Appropriate. The Passover was a religious
ceremony. Worship was placed before war and
conquest.
31Its a new beginningIts Time To eat in a new
land.
- (Josh 511 NKJV) And they ate of the produce of
the land on the day after the Passover,
unleavened bread and parched grain, on the very
same day.
32Its a new beginningIts Time To eat in a new
land.
- (Josh 511 NKJV) And they ate of the produce of
the land on the day after the Passover,
unleavened bread and parched grain, on the very
same day.
Nothing is mentioned, but think! What entitles
them to the food of the land? Did they purchase
the food, or have they taken it as conquers?
33They had loathed the manna. Now its over!
- (Num 114 NKJV) Now the mixed multitude who were
among them yielded to intense craving so the
children of Israel also wept again and said "Who
will give us meat to eat?
34They had loathed the manna. Now its over!
- (Num 115-6) "We remember the fish which we ate
freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the
leeks, the onions, and the garlic 6 "but now
our whole being is dried up there is nothing at
all except this manna before our eyes!"
35But Those that loathed the manna Never entered
the Promised Land!
- (Num 115-6) "We remember the fish which we ate
freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the
leeks, the onions, and the garlic 6 "but now
our whole being is dried up there is nothing at
all except this manna before our eyes!"
36No More Manna!
- (Josh 512 NKJV) Then the manna ceased on the
day after they had eaten the produce of the land
and the children of Israel no longer had manna,
but they ate the food of the land of Canaan that
year.
37No More Manna!
- (Josh 512 NKJV) Then the manna ceased on the
day after they had eaten the produce of the land
and the children of Israel no longer had manna,
but they ate the food of the land of Canaan that
year.
But those who complained the most never ate the
bread of Canaan
38Who is really in charge?
- (Josh 513 NKJV) And it came to pass, when
Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes
and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him
with His sword drawn in His hand.
39Who is really in charge?
- (Josh 513 NKJV) And it came to pass, when
Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes
and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him
with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went
to Him and said to Him, "Are You for us or for
our adversaries?"
40Who is really in charge?
- (Josh 514 NKJV) So He said,
- And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and
worshiped, and said to Him, "What does my Lord
say to His servant?"
"No, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I
have now come."
41Who is really in charge?
- (Josh 515 NKJV) Then the Commander of the
Lord's army said to Joshua, "Take your sandal off
your foot, for the place where you stand is
holy." And Joshua did so.
42And We must remember!
- (Exo 34 NKJV) So when the LORD saw that he
turned aside to look, God called to him from the
midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And
he said, "Here I am.
43And We must remember!
- (Exo 35 NKJV) Then He said, "Do not draw near
this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for
the place where you stand is holy ground."
44And We must remember!
- (Exo 35 NKJV) Then He said, "Do not draw near
this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for
the place where you stand is holy ground." - Yes, you remember when God called Moses to go to
Egypt to lead His people out.
45Who is really in charge?
- (Josh 515 NKJV) Then the Commander of the
Lord's army said to Joshua, "Take your sandal off
your foot, for the place where you stand is
holy." And Joshua did so. - Now the Lord is speaking through the Commander
of the Lord's army, and Joshua is ready to lead
under God.
