  • To become a lead agency in Injury Prevention
    and Control contributing to a major reduction of
    the injury burden nationally and internationally.

    of interventions and implementation of injury
    management programs.

Who we are?
  • A registered non-governmental organization which
    started its research activities in 1996 and was
    incorporated in May 1998.
  • ICCUs growth?
  • A secretariat for Injury Prevention Initiative
    for Africa (IPIFA) 1999.
  • A member of Safekids Worldwide 2003.
  • WHO Collaborating Center for Injury and Violence
    Prevention 2006.

Activities- Training
  • 1. Trauma Team Training
  • About 200 health personnel have been trained in
    Acute and Emergency Trauma Care at Casualty depts
    in about 15 hospitals.
  • 2. First Aid Training
  • Over 500 people trained from community health
    workers, traffic police, military, prison
    wardens, parents, teachers, market vendors and
    leaders.
  • 3. Essential Surgical Skills
  • Course taught to students at Makerere, Gulu and
    Mbarara Medical Schools.

Activities- Advocacy
  • A key role in drafting of the Ministry of Health,
    Injury Prevention Policy ( on halt).
  • Instrumental in getting the Ministry of
    Health-Uganda to include injuries as a health
    priority.
  • Instrumental in develop a Road Safety Education
    Curriculum for Primary Schools.
  • Instrumental in developing the Peace building
    Curriculum for Northern Uganda.
  • Instrumental in initiating and promoting National
    and Continental activities in Injury Surveillance
    and Prevention.
  • Instrumental in promoting Child Injury Prevention.

Activities Community Programs
  • Training trauma care to health officers.
  • First aid skills to non-medical people in the
    communities.
  • Dissemination of injury knowledge.
  • Educating children in Injury control clubs.
  • Educating parents on child safety in homes.
  • Educating peace to school children in schools.
  • Educating drivers, motorcyclists on road safety.
  • Spearheading implementation of low cost
    interventions (speed bumps, painting pedestrian
    crossings).

Activities - Surveillance
  • ICC-U injury surveillance in hospitals has
    expanded
  • from 3 sites in Kampala (Mulago, Rubaga and
  • Kawolo) to 5 regional sites namely
  • Mulago Referral Hospital Central.
  • Lacor Hospital - North.
  • Buhinga Fortportal Hospital West.
  • Mbarara Hospital South.
  • Mbale Hospital East.

Activities International Support to Students
  • ICCU has build scientific capacity with about 20
    international students (visiting scholars) from
    recognized international Universities.

Strategic Plans
  • ICCU has had 2 strategic Plans
  • 2001/2- 2005/6.
  • 2006/7- 20010/11 (This was not completed and not
    effected).

Financial Situation
  • ICCU has been financed by the CNIS from inception
    to date (Main funders).
  • However there have been other funding sources for
    different short term projects.
  • ICCUs funding was steadily growing by 10 by
    2004, and by 2006, had grown by 87. This was due
    to the several sources of funding.
  • From 2007 to date ICCU funding has miserably
    dropped.

Challenges
  • Injury is not yet a recognizable Public Health
    Problem by the Ugandan Government.
  • The Injury Prevention Policy is still a draft and
    efforts to pursue its completion have been
    futile.
  • Limited funding sourced internationally and
    nationally.
  • Over dependency on 1 external funding.
  • Safety issues are still a myth for Ugandans.
  • Limited and passive safety laws and regulations.
