6Brent Spence Bridge
- Built 1963 Three lanes top and bottom 80,000
vehicles per day - Late 1980s Four lanes top and bottom,
eliminating the emergency lanes. - Current capacity 140,000 vehicles per day
- Predicted capacity 2030 180,000 vehicles per
day - Predictions are that the bridge has only 12 to 14
years of stability and if the truck traffic keeps
increasing this time period will be shorter.

8The assignment....
You are the mayor of Covington, Kentucky. The
residents who elected you are angry because the
area needs a new bridge to cross the Ohio River.
You have heard the stories of jammed traffic and
dangerous situations due to the deteriorating
bridge. The area does not have the money from
taxes to pay for the bridge, and attempts to
raise the money from local businesses have
failed. There is an upcoming election in the fall
and you want very much to be reelected as
Covington mayor. You must find money to do
something about the Brent Spence Bridge. Your
last chance is to lobby before your state and
federal government to convince them to allocate
the funds for the bridge reconstruction. Write a
persuasive and convincing speech to accomplish
the goal - Covington will get its bridge and you
will be reelected!
