What is Family Violence ?
  • Dysfunctional families
  • Abuse, mistreatment or neglect that adults or
    children may experience in their intimate,
    kinship or dependent relationships.
  • Unable to provide their children with emotional
    support that is needed
  • Occurs in relationship of family, intimacy,
    dependency, or trust
  • Ranges from physical, emotional, financial, and
    sexual abuse, psychological abuse, destruction of
    property and homicide

Types of Family Violence
  • Physical and sexual abuse towards- spousal-
    elder- child- siblings- gay- lesbians-
    heterosexuals

Causes
  • One or both parents have addictions or compulsion
    ( drugs, alcohol, gambling, overworking,
    religion.. Etc)
  • Parents use threats of physical violence
  • Exploit children and treat them as if they can
    respond to the physical and emotional needs of
    adults
  • Parents unable to provide with financial or basic
    physical care of children
  • Parents controlling their children belief system
    (religious, political, financial, or personal)
  • Disorder of a family member

Consequences
  • Individuals who have been exposed to family
    violence consequences
  • The effects may appear immediately, or they may
    emerge over time depending on the nature, extent
    and duration of the abuse,
  • Psychological, physical, behavioral, academic,
    sexual, interpersonal, self-perceptual or
    spiritual consequences may happen
  • Children who are exposed to violence in their
    homes may experience serious effects that
    threaten their health, safety, behavior,
    emotional and social development, and educational
    progress. Some may need to be removed from their
    home
  • Often, it is not recognizable or understood by
    others, which gives the abused ones isolation
    experience fatal consequences such as death

  • Abusers consequence
  • responsible for the violence and harm theyve
    made ( i.e. life sentence in jail)
  • Involvement of criminal justice
  • Child welfare system
  • Some eventually kills their victims and
    themselves
  • Societies consequence
  • 4.2 billion per year in social services,
    education, criminal justice, labour, employment,
    health and medical costs in violence against
    women

Prevention

Signs of Abuse
  • He or she appear anxious, depressed, withdrawn
    and avoids to talk
  • Parents or other family members criticizes them
    in front of you, making remarks that make you
    feel uncomfortable
  • You see or hear about repeated bruises, broken
    bones, or other injuries that is a result from
    accidents
  • Family member try to control this persons every
    move, making them account for each minute spent
    away from home
  • They are often late or absent from school, or
    they regularly leave social functions early
    because a family member is waiting

How to Help Others
  • Advise them to go a family therapist
  • If pattern continues immediate action is
    necessary, contact or find a trusted adult that
    can help
  • Talk to them, advise them, be there for them
  • Find out information to help them
  • Call a domestic violence hotline (BC Institute
    Against Family Violence Tel 604.669.7055 )
