• It was a time of hope and search of abundant,
  inexpensive land that promised a wealth of
  opportunity.

• Texas was still under Mexican rule. American
  empresarios were given the opportunity to bring
  American settlers into this territory, the land
  known as Texas today.

• Moses Austin signed the first empresario
  contract, hoping to bring settlers to Mexico. He
  died before he could fulfill his duty. Stephen
  Austin took over his fathers duty and proceeded
  to begin his colony with 300 families, known as
  the Old 300.

• You are a member of Stephen F. Austins Old
  300. You have traveled with your family and
  others from Missouri by wagon. At Nacogdoches,
  you regroup with other settlers from Arkansas and
  Virginia. From here, you will begin the final
  day of your journey to locate a site and build
  the first Anglo-American colony in Texas.

• After Stephen F. Austin selected you to be a
  member of his group of settlers, you sold
  everything you could not load onto your wagon.
  You have with you only your family, enough
  supplies to last a short time, and the necessary
  tools to earn a living. Many hardships are
  encountered along the way. Food is scarce at
  times. Several members of the wagon train become
  ill and everyone is very anxious to stop
  traveling and to settle in the new land.

• The tradesmen want to settle along the river,
  which is deep, even though this seems to be the
  season of low water. In a short time, they
  expect the Lively to arrive with more colonists
  and merchants from New Orleans.

• Those who are farmers say they must have fertile,
  workable soil.

• Austin has warned the settlers of hostile Indians
  in the new land. He feels the settlement must be
  located so that it can be defended from the
  Comanches, Apaches, Karankawas, and from the sea.

• Imagine you were one of these settlers. What are
  some factors you would consider? How would you
  decide what area is best suited for your colony?
