  • Medicated Feedstuffs (MFS)
  • MFS products are POM-V or POM-VPS medicines
authorised for inclusion in animal feed
  • They can only be mixed into feed by either
  • a) an approved feed mill
  • b) a farm approved as a home-mixer

3
  • Authorised Feed Mills
  • Before inclusion of an MFS product, the mill must
    have an MFS prescription
  • The farm must have a copy of this
  • Both farm and mill must store these for 5 years
  • Mill cannot supply more than 31 days feed at a
    time

4
  • Premixes
  • Mineral/vitamin supplements for inclusion by home
    mixers may include an MFS
  • The MFS prescription must state the inclusion
rate of MFS in the premix, together with the
inclusion rate of the premix into the final feed
and the levels of active substance in the
    finished feed

5
  • Home Mixers
  • Farms approved as category B home mixers may
purchase MFS products for inclusion in feed on
    farm.
  • These may be purchased from a vet (or from a mill
    against a veterinary prescription)
  • MFS products must be included at a minimum level
    of 2ks/tonne when home-mixed
  • All records must be kept for 5 years

6
  • Withdrawal periods
  • All MFS prescriptions must state the minimum
    withdrawal period
  • Where 2 different MFS products are included in
the same feed, the longer of the withdrawal
    periods applies
  • If the inclusion rates are outside the
    recommended levels, the default withdrawal
    periods
  • will apply

7
  • Default withdrawal periods
  • 28 days for meat
  • 7 days for milk and eggs
  • Meat inspection at abattoirs includes routine
sampling for evidence of medicine residues in
    meat
  • Failures are heavily penalised

8
  • Default withdrawal periods
  • Top-dressing of pig feed is not allowed
  • Water soluble medicines do not require an MFS
    prescription, unless used in wet-feed
  • Inspections are carried out
  • All records must be kept for 5 years
