1. In what year were pubs and bars no longer able
to refuse to serve women at the bar?
  • 1982
  • This was established by a legal case taken by 2
women after they had visited a wine bar where
they were told to sit at a table be served from
there. The case went to the Court of Appeal who
decided that sex discrimination had taken place
because the women were denied the opportunity to
drink where men drank and to mix with other
people who were drinking in the wine bar.

2. When could a woman apply for a loan or credit
in her own name?
  • 1981
  • This was established by a legal case taken by a
woman who had problems when she went to buy a
3-piece suite. She paid a deposit and applied for
credit to repay the balance. She was told that
for her to get credit her husband would have to
sign a guarantee form. This wouldnt apply in
reverse, i.e., she wouldnt have to be a
guarantor for her husband if he applied for
credit. The Court of Appeal decided that this was
    unlawful sex discrimination

  • The changes came in gradually. The Midwives Act
of 1952 prevented men from training or practicing
as midwives, and the original Sex Discrimination
Act 1975 continued this. In 1977 2 midwifery
schools were allowed to recruit men as an
experiment and this was deemed a success. In 1983
the SDA was amended to allow them full access to
    the profession.
