1
  • Kristy LaPorte, Meghan OConnell, Shannon Otis
  • Grade 3

2
  •
  • Our unit plan covers the four major content
areas Math, Science, Social Studies, and
English Language Arts. During the unit plan, the
students will learn a wide range of information
on Penguins of Antarctica. This includes a brief
    history of Penguins, environmental issues
regarding Penguins, such as Global Warming and
the geography of Antarctica and where Penguins
can be found on the continent.

3
  • Also included in this unit is multiplication and
division followed by a unique interpretation of
the game BINGO. Our interpretation of BINGO is
called PENGO. For the Science portion of the
unit plan, the students will discover facts about
Penguins and participate in experiments involving
how Penguins walk and how they keep their eggs
warm, the temperature of Antarctica compared to
where the students live, and the habitat/food for
Penguins. For the English Language Arts portion
of the unit plan, the students will learn new
vocabulary associated with Penguins, will use
their comparing and contrasting skills based on
two different stories about Penguins, and they
will brainstorm about what it would be like if
    they were a Penguin.

4
  • The students will enjoy a Guest Speaker, a trip
to the zoo, and a movie day at the end of this
    unit

5
  • Due to the ever-growing topic of Penguins and the
thematic features in the past three years, such
as the documentary film March of the Penguins,
the Academy Award Winning film Happy Feet, and
the light-hearted animated feature film of the
summer of 2007, Surfs Up, the topic of Penguins
has become very popular for all ages. Students
will relate and associate these films into their
minds as they are learning about the subject of
    Penguins within the educational environment.

6
  • Students will associate their real life events,
such as going to the zoo and their other
experiences with Penguins, as they learn about
serious topics, such as Global Warming, reading a
thermometer, and other topics, such as Math and
    increasing their vocabulary skills.
