Title: Mitosis

1
Mitosis
2
Cellular Division
  • Binary fission - cell division in which one cell
    splits into two
  • Mitosis - cell division involving duplication
    and separation of the chromosomes
  • Meiosis - cell division that reduces the number
of chromosomes in a cell by half
  • Interphase occurs before mitosis. During
    interphase, chromosomes are copied.

3
Stages of Mitosis
  • Prophase chromosomes condense into rod-like
    structures
  • Metaphase chromosomes line-up along the equator
  • Anaphase chromatids separate and move to opposite
    sides of the cell
  • Telophase a nuclear membrane forms around each
set of chromosomes and mitosis is complete

5
  • After mitosis, cytokinesis takes place.
  • In cells that lack a cell wall, the cell pinches
    in two.
  • In cells that have a cell wall, a cell plate
forms between the two new cells.

6
Meiosis
  • Only eukaryotic cells can undergo meiosis.
  • When a cell undergoes meiosis, a form of cell
division occurs that produces daughter cells with
half of the species' usual number of chromosomes,
    or haploid cells.
  • These resulting daughter cells are gametes and
aid the organism in sexual reproduction.

7
Assignments
  • Make a circle map using the following words
    binary fusion, mitosis, meiosis
  • Make a tree map with the stages of mitosis,
listing the definition and picture for each stage
  • Make index cards with each of the stages of
    mitosis (do NOT label them)
  • Yarn activity with mitosis
  • Write the lyrics to Mitosis 4 stages

8
Test timeAre you ready?
  • Know the definition for binary fusion, mitosis,
    and meiosis.
  • Be able to draw, color and label the stages of
    mitosis.
