MITOSIS

Review
  • Which cells use Mitosis?
  • All but the sex cells, muscle and nerve cells
  • For example skin, cheek, plant cells
  • How many cells does Mitosis create?
  • 2 daughter cells
  • Are the cells diploid or haploid?
  • Diploid because have two pairs of chromosomes

3
Stages of Mitosis
4
Mitosis
5
Interphase
  • Takes up the majority of the cell Cycle time
  • During Interphase most of the cells life
    activities are taking place
  • Growth
  • Metabolism (Breakdown of food)
  • Chromosomes are duplicated
  • Growth and final preparations for division

6
Mitosis
  • The last part of the cell cycle is called Mitosis
  • Mitosis includes the last 4 phases of the cell
    Cycle
  • Prophase
  • Metaphase
  • Anaphase
  • Telophase

7
Prophase
  • Longest phase of mitosis
  • The nucleus begins to disappear
  • Chromatin coils up to form Sister Chromotids
  • The sister chromatids are identical to the parent
    cells DNA
  • The halves are connected by a Centromere

8
Prophase Cont
  • 2 Centrioles appear and migrate to the edges of
    the cell
  • Spindle fibers begin to form between the
Centrioles and help pull apart the sister
    chromatids

9
Metaphase
  • The 2nd and shortest phase of mitosis
  • The Chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers by
    the centromeres
  • The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell

10
Anaphase
  • The 3rd phase of Mitosis
  • The sister chromotids begin to break apart at the
    centromeres
  • Chromatids move towards the centrioles

11
Telophase
  • The 4th phase of mitosis
  • The chromatids reach the edges of the cell
  • The cell begins to uncoil the chromosomes
  • The uncoiled chromosomes then begin telling the
    cell what to do
  • The nucleus is reformed
  • The plasma membrane begins to separate into 2
    cells
