  • 47 of the Haitian population, an estimated 3.8
    million people, are undernourished.
  • 92 of families living in the Central Plateau
    reported extreme food insecurity in a recent
    Zanmi Lasante study.
  • 45 of these same families reported a monthly
    monetary income of less than or equal to 500 goud
    (approximately 12.50).
  • Haitis food insecurity is compounded by forced
    compliance with IMF Structural Adjustment
    Policies (SAP) that have lowered tariffs on
    US-grown rice from 30 percent to 3 percent,
    flooding the local market with US agribusiness,
    while bankrupting peasant farmers.
  • Today, Haiti is forced to import half of all its
    food the highest percentage of food dependency
    in the hemisphere.

  • A mixture of locally grown peanuts, powdered
    milk, sugar, oil, vitamins, and minerals that
    provides approximately 500 calories per 100g and
    is used during the first phase of treatment of
    malnutrition
  • Advantage over powdered milk formulas as it does
    not have to be mixed with clean water
  • Distribution to an initial 30 kids started in
    November 2006
  • Ongoing programmatic expansion to reach 2,000
    outpatient pediatric patients enrolled in ZLs
    nutrition program

  • A mixture of locally grown rice, beans and corn
    ground to a digestible powder and mixed with
    clean water is a rich source of protein and amino
    acids and recommended by UNICEF and the World
    Health Organization.
  • Anticipated distribution to 2,000 pediatric
    malnutrition out-patients during the second phase
    of treatment.

Partnership with Local Agriculture
  • 10 acre irrigated farm neighboring Cange, run by
    a skilled team of local agronomists
  • Plans for future land expansion and for an
    agricultural vocational school
  • Rice, corn, beans and peanuts used to make akamil
    and Medika Manba are produced locally by Zanmi
    Agrikol farmers
  • Community-based agronomists, ajan agrikol,
    follow up on malnutrition patients via home
    visits and work together with families to improve
    crop yields of family land plots.
